NOTRE DAME CATHOLIC PRIMARY SCHOOL
Term 2 Week 3 - 14 May 2020
Dear Parents and Staff
When I commenced writing this item, I was still unsure about what the Premier was going to announce this morning. Well, now we all know that he has stated that all children are expected to be attending school from next Monday unless there are medical circumstances which would place them or close family members at risk. We have been expecting an announcement such as this for a while now and I am pleased that it provides staff with the surety to focus mainly on regular classroom teaching. Of course, we will continue to cater for those children who are unable to attend and hope that the current environment improves to a point where they, too, may be able to be back at school with their friends and teachers.
This week we re-commenced our Makerspace programme with the Pre-Primary and Year Six children, next week we will resume Choir rehearsals and hope to commence enrichment classes for selected children in Week 5. Let’s hope that we are able to have a return to normality with all of our many “extra” activities up and running in the next few weeks. As particular activities commence parents will be advised by the staff who will be responsible for them.
DROP OFF AND PICK UP
I understand that the regulations regarding parents not entering the school grounds have added to the difficulties when dropping off and picking up children and we are exploring options to alleviate these however, I am very concerned by the number of parents who continue to stop in the streets which adjoin our school to drop children. I realise that this is outside of the school’s responsibility, but I am concerned about the safety of the children. Please take the extra couple of minutes to park legally and escort your children to the front gates if you do not want to use the drive through. This week we had a near disaster when a child was hit by a car door as their parent parked illegally and rushed off before realising that the child had not moved away sufficiently. I implore parents to take responsibility for their actions and to do everything possible to protect their children. The perceived need to get to where you think you need to be so urgently will pale very quickly if yours or another child was injured.
MERIT AWARDS
We are still unable to hold full school assemblies at the moment, but this has not stopped us from acknowledging our students who have been completing excellent work. Tomorrow we will hold our second Merit “Assembly” for the Term and hope to have improved our capacity to share these electronically with the parents.
DADS' & KIDS' CAMPOUT
I hope all of the dads have dusted off the family tent and checked that their BBQ is ready to go so that they can enjoy a night in the yard at home with their children on either Friday or Saturday night of this weekend. The weather looks to be fine, although a bit cold, so there are no excuses to not join our campout challenge. Remember that, when held at school, everyone has a burger for dinner, popcorn while they watch a movie and a bacon and egg burger for breakfast. Whilst my son, who is a little older than school age, won’t be able to join me, I will certainly be setting up my tent and enjoying the great outdoors. I will post photos of my setup on our school’s Facebook page (Notre Dame Facebook) and invite everyone else to do the same.

YEAR 6 CLASS NEWS
Over the last month I’ve been working from home because of Covid-19. The benefits from working from home are you can adjust your schedule depending on what subjects you want to spend longer on, or if you have finished that task you can move on to the next one which can then make the school day go a lot faster. It also makes a difference when you can eat lunch and recess whenever you want. But there are some bad things about working from home. I normally like socialising with other people in my class because it makes the work go quicker and can also improve the work itself, but I haven’t been able to do that because of Covid-19. Another disadvantage about working from home is I feel I’m not running around as much as if I went to school.

Anzac Day
My family and I got up at 6 o’clock to start the ANZAC ceremony on my drive-way. I did the ceremony on my drive-way because we couldn’t go to the park and stand at the Cub Scout ceremony. There were only a couple of people on our street doing the ceremony but on the other streets we could hear bugles so that was nice. When the ceremony finished I went to school and did an ANZAC ceremony. For the school ceremony we brought out the flag and the wreath and did the last post. Then the school ceremony finished and we went to class.

Staying fit at school and home
I usually played basketball in my backyard for about half an hour to an hour. Every day, me and my family went to Myles Park for a jog and then I played basketball again. On Friday’s I will meet my friends at the basketball courts to play even more basketball.

Merit Assembly
Our Merit assemblies looked a little different this term. Mr Winsor presented the certificates from his office and all of the classes watched from their classrooms using Teams Chat. The Year 6 leaders led the assembly from the staff room and did a great job. Congratulations to all the people receiving a Merit this week.
Whole Class Team Catch-ups!
Our Year 6 students have done an amazing job navigating Teams so that they can complete their online learning. Due to their brilliant understanding of Teams, we have been able to have whole class check-ins which has enabled us to see each others’ faces, share stories and generally catch up! We are so proud of our students for the maturity and enthusiasm they have shown towards online learning and we are so impressed by their ability to adapt to changing circumstances. You are all outstanding!

Guided Reading- The Online Edition
These couple of weeks have been different in guided reading. Usually we would sit in a group and all read the same book, but now we all read different books and some people are at school and some people are at home.
