COMPASS Mentoring

Where are you headed?

We are thrilled that you decided to be a mentor in our program this year. As a mentor, you will be responsible for meeting with your student at least three times a week. While we will be providing some basic structure of things to do with your student, we strongly encourage you to create a natural feel to each session. Take the time to get to know them and let them get to know you.

Weekly Meetings

You will meet with your student three times each week. Meetings will be conducted during flex times - it is up to you and your student to pick a time that best fits your schedules during that two hour window (7-9 pm). Each meeting will have a discussion topic and required/suggested activities corresponding to that day's topic. You will receive these details at orientation. We encourage you to make this plan your own as it best fits your student.

Personal Growth Plans

We are hoping that each student will be bringing a major goal that they want to work on over the course of the three weeks at SEI. However, many of our students will need help forming goals. Take the opportunity to teach them about setting a realistic, observable goal and talk about a plan to help them accomplish those goals.

Each student will be filing out a PGP with you. It consists of forming one big picture goal and then three short term goals - one for each week. This enables you to help them focus on forming skills step by step. During your last week, be sure to develop a plan for implementing these goals and skills for the rest of the year.

Themes to remember

  • Proverbs 27:17 As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.
  • Compass - help your student have a clearer view of where they are headed. Develop a "map" for them to follow on how to get there.
  • We are helping them put together pieces in their puzzle. Each step can help make things a bit clearer - but we might not always get to see the end result.
  • You should attempt to create a relationship that will last beyond these few weeks at SEI. Ask your student about how you can keep in touch and hold each other accountable.

We are here as resources for you. Please feel free to email, text, or call us during this prep time or at any point during SEI. We want to be present to help you come up with new ideas, solve problems, and better meet your student's needs.
