Mentors
Also, if a student is absent on the day their mentor typically visits and you are able to send a quick message to the mentor please do this prior to them arriving.
Finally, we have talked extensively this year about telling "our story." We are more than a report card rating and these members of the community are out telling what they think our story is! Let us always shine!!
YOGA
Also, here is a little more information about Meaghan, the instructor.
Hi everyone, my name is Meaghan Dunham! I am a former elementary school music teacher and now work as the Marketing Coordinator for Aperture Education. As a former teacher, I am so excited to be offering a yoga class for educators – goodness knows I could have used it when I was teaching! I graduated as a 200-hour registered yoga teacher in July of 2019, but have been practicing yoga for over 5 years. I specialize in deep stretch yoga, a restorative class in which poses are held for 2-5 minutes. These classes, in which your body never leaves the mat, are a great change of pace after a long day of being up on your feet! I am so honored that you have allowed me to walk you through this practice and my hope is that you will leave feeling refreshed, calm, and centered.
Sunshine Committee
Sunshine dues need to be turned in to Mrs. L Clarke by October 25. You will get a jeans pass for joining! Be on the lookout for a fun Halloween activity!
Thank you to everyone who came to help in the garden! We will soon be assigning a bed to each grade level.
Free Math Resource
Hey everyone! I wanted to pass along a free resource that you can use in your classrooms for number talks. If you think you're stuck in a rut with number talks (or if you just want something a pre-made and a little different), check out https://stevewyborney.com/. Steve Wyborney is a math teacher and instructional coach who has created these free resources and published them on his website. Let me know if you have any questions or need help finding something that works for you and your group! - Tanner
From Samuelle Davis
I will be administering the Cognitive Abilities Test, CogAT, to several students next week. The timing of the test will affect your enrichment or GT schedule.
Thursday: test starts 8am. NO 3rd SOAR group. I will pick up 4th GT after specials.
Friday: test starts at 8am. NO 2nd Enrichment. I will pick up 5th GT after I record scores for CO, maybe 930am-ish.
This is my first time with the online CogAT and I thank you in advance for your flexibility. Please let me know if you have any questions or see any conflicts.
Character Education
For the upcoming week the Character Ed lesson in on Positive Self- Talk. Really make this lesson your own, because I believe it is one of the most important ones. Our students so often think and feel negative thoughts about themselves, and it is important that they learn to switch their narrative.

Please indicate the mid-point of your SLO interval so I can schedule mid-point conferences accordingly. For example, if my SLO is running from October-December I would enter Nov. 15 on the form below as an approximate mid-point. Let me know if you have any questions.
New Bookkeeper/PowerSchool Clerk
Tracy moved to South Carolina from Portsmouth, NH where she was secretary to the principal in an elementary school setting. Prior to this she was the administrative assistant to the Chief Academic Officer. She brings a wealth of knowledge with her regarding both bookkeeping and PowerSchool.

Safety Committee Notes
Current Concerns
- Please make sure you are taking the closest, safest exit during a fire drill or evacuation. If you are on the turf or on the first/second grade playground (near the yellow reflection poles), please make sure that you have a plan to move quickly. These yellow reflection poles mark a dirt path that firetrucks will use if they need to come near the school to put out a fire.
- When you show your red/green card during a fire drill, make sure you are taking attendance based on your homeroom. Even if you know a student is with another teacher, please show RED until they are called over the walkie talkie and reported safe.
- Every homeroom should have a clipboard. If you need one, see Mrs. Kelsey. Your clipboard needs…
- rosters with phone numbers for reunification – Can Mrs. Brown provide this from PowerSchool?
- Safe Seven Card (red and green card) – These are available in the Conference Room.
- nurse passes and band aids
- Remember to keep all doors closed and locked. This includes interior and exterior doors. It may be a good idea to check behind you when you go out of an exterior door.
- Students are wandering throughout the building. Please ensure that all students leave with a pass.
Create Scholarship Opportunity: Support Staff interested in Bachelor's in Special Education
The SCDE Office of Special Education Services is pleased to announce a new level of SC-CREATE scholarship funding that will pay 100% of the course tuition and textbook costs for individuals employed in SC public/charter schools who need to obtain a Bachelors degree in special education in order to qualify for an initial SCDE educator license to teach. Heretofore, CREATE applicants have been required to complete the first 60 credits with their own funding in order to qualify for CREATE funds.
All full-time employees in/outside the classroom who do not hold a Bachelors degree (of any kind) are eligible for this new initiative, including teacher assistants, paraeducators, and non-instructional staff. Individuals with and without previous college coursework are eligible.
For your school district, qualified CREATE applicants will take their coursework through Converse College, which offers Bachelors degree programs in Intellectual Disabilities or Learning Disabilities. Note that, since Converse is not a co-ed institution, only female applicants may apply. Program coursework is available primarily on-campus after school, in the evening, and during summers with some online coursework available. Since commuting to and from the campus will be required for classes, the target pool of applicants are those who reside within a 45-mile drive to Spartanburg.
Scholarship recipients must remain employed full-time in their schools in order to continue receiving scholarship funds. Upon completion of degree program, recipients are required to return three (3) years of special education teaching service to the State.
The first step in the qualifying process is to submit a CREATE application through the link below:
https://sccreate.org/secure/apply.htm
CREATE applications will be processed within 3-5 business days, after which applicants will be directed to submit an application to Converse College. CREATE applicants who want to be considered for CREATE funding and desire to begin their Bachelors degree program in the Spring, 2020 semester must submit their application to Converse College by December 1. Once applications are screened, eligible applicants may be required to submit a writing sample and invited to interview on the Converse College campus or via Skype by the first week of December.
A Cohort of 11 students to be selected for CREATE scholarship funds will be notified by early-January, 2020 while ensuring representation from school districts within the 45-mile radius. Each recipient will then be provided with a draft of their individualized Spring semester schedule of classes. An initial advisement meeting may take place with CREATE Center Director, Dr. Ansley Boggs prior to the start of classes in the Spring semester.
SCDE is excited about this opportunity to partner with Converse College in addressing the ongoing special education teacher shortage in South Carolina. Questions may be directed via email to Dr. Joe Sutton, Program Director, CREATE at director@sccreate.org.
