NOTEWORTHY NEWS BY MRS. FOSTER
WEEK OF FEBRUARY 2, 2015
CAMP ACADEMICS
GREETINGS
We have to be thankful for the beautiful weather we had last week. We are starting something new this Friday. It is called Sleeping Bag and Flashlight Friday. I am going to let the kids bring a sleeping bag or blanket, a pillow, and a flashlight to play word games. This goes along with the camping theme we have in the room. The kids are really excited about it.
READING/WRITING
We will be continuing to write responses to nonfiction books that we are reading. We are concentrating on setting and characters. We will also continue to work on retelling stories. many times when you ask your child about what they have read, they will give you one sentence about the story. We are working very hard to tell about the beginning, three things that happened in the story, and how it ended. You can do this at home with your child's reading book.
MATH
We are doing such a great job with our facts. We have started a mystery number of the day. I will give them clues that describe a number. Some of the clues are: it has 2 digits, the number in the ten's place is ___, it is greater than ___. This is a great activity for you to do with your child at home. This week we will be working with addition facts. As you can tell, knowing your facts is a very important concept in first grade.
SCIENCE
We are moving into a study of weather. This should be a lot of fun. There are so many things to learn about. We have predictions of a hard winter, eventually.
SOCIAL STUDIES
We will be learning about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. We will find out how they changed our country.
PEARLS OF WISDOM
Start by doing what is necessary; then do what's possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible.
