How to Get a Great Letter of Recommendation
Teacher recommendations are an important component of your college applications. Check out these tips from the College Board on how to make sure yours stand out from the crowd!
The option to request teacher recommendations for your college applications is now available in Naviance. Please follow these guidelines when submitting a request for a letter of recommendation.
- Ask the teacher if they are able to write a recommendation letter in person before placing the request in Naviance.
- Complete your Senior Brag sheet in Naviance so the teacher has great content to include in your letter.
- Request the letter at least two weeks before your college deadlines.
- Do not request letters from more than three teacher
- Know the requirements of your applications. If an institution will not allow more than one recommendation, only ask one teacher for a letter.
- Use the directions below to request a teacher recommendation in Naviance.
Find 'letters of recommendation' under the 'colleges' tab
- From the Colleges tab in Family Connection, students will click on a new link under the My Colleges section, titled Letters of Recommendation.
Select 'Add Request'
On the recommendation request page, students will click on the blue Add Request button to submit their requests, one teacher at a time.
Submit the Request
- Find the teacher's name in the drop down menu.
- I recommend that you select 'all colleges' so your letter can be sent to multiple institutions.
- Add a personal note to your teacher highlighting any important aspects of your applications.
Save the Request & Review the Status of the Letter
Be sure to click the Save button at the bottom of the screen which returns you to your recommendation status page. At the top of the screen, a green status bar shows the teacher's name and the number of request for the student.
