Written Comprehension Helpful Tips
January 2016
The Struggle is Real...
Does your child struggle to respond to the text with written comprehension? They are not alone.
Here are some helpful tips to try at home to encourage your child to respond to the text.
Read the Question and/or petition Completely
Sometimes reading it twice helps.
Count how many parts are in the question and/or petition
Start thinking of each part in the question and/or petition. Break it down into parts and answer one part at a time.
Answer the prompt COMPLETELY!
Go back and read the prompt again to ensure all parts have been answered. Did you include a part or detail in the text in your response?
Don't Give Up
Now what...
After your child tries these helpful steps have them continue to practice this process. Have your child score their own writing.
RUBRIC
Score of 0 or 1 - Something is missing (Was it a missing part or do they not understand the story?)
Score of 2- Answered all parts (This is passing)
Score of 3- Answered all parts and added a little more and was able to stay on topic.
