Letter from Mrs. Craig - Revised April 20th
Dear, Washington Parents -
By now you may have heard that Governor Pritzker has declared that schools will remain in remote/e-learning for the remainder of the school year. While the staff and I have been preparing for that possibility, the finality of last Friday's announcement is something we are still processing. In my 25 years in education, I have always cherished the last days of the school year. They are a time to reflect and celebrate with our students.
As the Friday CUSD 200 update mentioned, our thoughts will be on these important final days of school in terms of providing everyone with closure. There are still many unknowns, but I will definitely keep you updated as the situation evolves. Please know that we, as a Washington staff, care deeply for our students, and the Friday news was emotional for us, as I know it has been for many of you and your children.
There are two plans I can share with you at this point regarding our 5th grade students. Every spring, I have lunch with the 5th graders in small groups. The students provide me feedback about their Washington experiences, and we talk about middle school. I am going to begin those lunches with 5th graders this week. In the hopes of meeting with every 5th grader over the next couple weeks, I will run some meetings as "lunch with the principal" and some later in the afternoon as "snack with the principal." These will occur via Google Meets; 5th grade parents and students have received information via email, and students will receive Google Meets invitations soon.
In addition, Mr. Babb always creates some incredible end-of-year videos for our school. He is beginning this work and will lengthen the videos a bit this year. To further celebrate our 5th graders, I am going to put out a Flashback Slide Show of our 5th grade class each week between now and the end of school. We will start this week with kindergarten; watch our Facebook and Twitter for these!
Finally, I encourage you to continue to support your children in engaging in e-learning. This is important from an educational standpoint but also a social emotional one. We are still a Washington School community; even though we cannot be in our building at this time, it is so important we stay connected!
Stay safe and healthy!
Sincerely,
Jennifer Craig
Principal
CUSD 200 E-Learning Plan
Food Insecurity Crisis Fund
In District 200, 28% of students come from low-income households. Each day, 3,310 students receive a free or reduced lunch. While the District has done an incredible job of meeting the food needs of families during the school week during this pandemic, many parents are struggling to feed their children in the evenings and on weekends.
Your donation today will allow District 200 social workers to connect local families with supportive resources to meet nutritional needs.
