The Video Submission Deadline is coming up for the STEAM Video Contest! Parents, if your students still need to submit their video, please do so by Monday, February 19. I can't wait to review all the submissions as I feel like this will be one of the best ones yet! Please see examples and extra information about the competition below!
We also have some exciting Chess opportunities for students coming up this weekend and in the beginning of March! Please be sure to read more about these below as we are hoping to have many students participate!
There is also important information about Spring Picture Day, which is happening tomorrow, posted below. Please read over this information carefully.
Lastly, I am excited to present our Fulton Science Academy Introduction Video to you all! I, along with our entire staff and faculty, see all of our wonderful parents, students, and each other as family and are thrilled to present this video to you. Without the help of our families and all of the extra hours put in by our staff, we could not have created the remarkable school and community that we have. I want to thank you all from the bottom of my heart for making all of this possible.
Parents, please be reminded that After - School Care is provided every day from 4:30 pm to 6:00 pm for a fee of $15.00 per day or $200.00 for the month. We ask that parents pick up any remaining students by 6:00 pm, and no later, as the school closes at 6:00pm. Sometimes our Academic Teams will stay later, but these students are not considered to be in After-Care. There are also sometimes outside organizations that use our facility for sports events, so it may look like there are still plenty of people here, but these more often than not, do not include aftercare students. Thank you for your understanding.
Tomorrow, TUESDAY, is Spring Picture Day!

Ethan Gao, JR. Pro-Golf
Ethan is a junior pro in golf. He was selected into the All star team and represents Team Georgia along with other 9 Players. The Georgia team won all the matches since the season started last August and finally brought the National Championship trophy home to Georgia last November in Scottsdale.
As the No. 1 player and one of the youngest players on the team, on the first day Ethan putt a 25 foot eagle putt to end the game with a win for Georgia. On the second day he and his partner played 8 straight birdies in a 9 hole game with the first hole parred.
"Sports Illustrated for Kids" also featured him as the "sportkids of the month" in its Jan/Feb issue!

Middle School Science Olympiad Team Takes Top Honors at Regionals!
FSA Middle School Science Olympiad students won the Regional Tournament held at Forsyth Central High School on Saturday, beating 21 teams from the Atlanta Metro area and earning an invitation to the State Tournament. Two teams of FSA students competed at the Regional and the teams placed first and second overall, however Science Olympiad rules limit each school to one trophy and one invitation to the State Tournament.
Science Olympiad head coaches Gloria Stathos and Pam Walsh were impressed with their teams. “Not since 2014 have we had teams that placed first and second at a tournament,” said Gloria Stathos. “This accomplishment speaks to the depth on our team. We tell our students that their toughest competitors are often their teammates, and this just shows how true it is.”
“We’re trying not to be too excited,” said Pam Walsh. “This tournament did not include a lot of traditionally high performing teams that we will go up against at the State Tournament. So, while we are super proud of our students, we know they will have to continue to work and improve in their events. We will need to place first or second at State in order to advance to Nationals.”
In the next few weeks, FSA students will work to improve their building devices. “Building events are notoriously difficult,” explained Pam Walsh. “Different flooring surfaces, changes in humidity, transporting a device to tournaments are all factors in a device’s performance. It’s hard to control all of these variables and have your device run consistently well.”

Chess Team Qualifier information
Hi Chess Players,
It is that time of the year when we need all tournament chess players to come out and play for Fulton Science Academy at the State Chess Team Qualifiers! The top teams from the Qualifier events will move on to the championship, which is on March 25, 2018 (more details).
This year, the Qualifier level has been split into two events to reduce the size of the tournament (last year was one huge tournament). The Qualifier tournaments are unrated and do not require USCF membership.
March 3, 2018
Students in K-3 section and 6-8 section should play this Qualifier.
March 10, 2018
Students in K-1 section and K-5 section should play this Qualifier.
In general, students should have played at least one tournament prior to these Qualifiers. Students have more fun if they are not worried about things like how to use the chess clock, etc. The exception to this is the K-1 level. As long as kids know how to play chess and are solid with all the rules, it would be ok for a child new to tournaments to play in the K-1 section.
Please register your child by clicking the links provided above. You will be given a choice to register as an Individual or a Team. Please register as an Individual (you will be put on the team list with your other teammates by GCA after you register).
If anyone has any questions about the Section their child belongs in or any other questions, please email Karen@atlchessclub.com
Read Across America Day is fast approaching
Read Across America Day is Friday, March 2nd. To help prepare for this day, we would love to build our elementary classroom libraries with gently used books donated by our FSA families. If you have any books that are no longer needed in your home, please consider donating. We will take the books collected and distribute to all of the elementary classrooms. We are excited to get some new books in the hands of our students on Read Across America Day.
Donations will be accepted until February 23rd and may be dropped off in Ms. Ivarie’s office, room 1202. Thank you!
An important message from the nurse about this cold and flu season
LET’S HELP PREVENT COLDS,THE FLU AND OTHER INFECTIOUS ILLNESSES FROM SPREADING THIS WINTER
As the school bell rings and we are headed back to class, the threat of colds, the flu and other infectious illnesses are a major concern, especially since there are confirming reports from the Department of Public Health (DPH) that flu activity is increasing statewide, along with the number of hospitalizations due to flu-related illness. Unfortunately, we had a few students out with the flu just before the snow break.
What can we do to help prevent the spread of the flu and other infectious illnesses? The first thing is simple...wash your hands frequently! Using hand sanitizer is also an option when soap and running water are not available. However, select a hand sanitizer that is alcohol based (and as with any soap, always supervise its use with small children). Research has shown that frequent hand washing and regular use of hand sanitizers in school settings can reduce absenteeism by as much as 20% (plus) in students and staff, and increased attendance by students and staff translates to improved academic performance!
Also, follow the school's standard procedure for routine cleaning and disinfecting. Flu viruses are relatively fragile, so standard cleaning and disinfecting practices are sufficient to remove or kill them.
Here are some additional things you can do to prevent the spread of the flu and other illnesses:
- Teach children not to share personal items like drinks, food, eating utensils, or other personal items like towels, combs, brushes.
- Properly dispose of used tissues when coughing and sneezing, and use your elbow, arm or sleeve when coughing or sneezing instead of the hand.
- Wash athletic practice clothing each day,and shower after any contact sports.
- Stay home if you are sick especially during the first days of illness when symptoms are the most severe and the infection is most contagious. Return to work or school only when symptoms are improving and when you’ve had no fever for at least 24 hrs.
- Get vaccinated. Vaccination is the best protection against contracting the flu.
- Please allow students to watch topics on hand washing and the flu.

Home Visits - A Fun Way to meet your teachers!
Home visits are a casual way for your child to spend time with his/her teacher in the comfort of their home. Teachers enjoy having a chance to see children in this comfortable environment, doing whatever makes them most happy and spend time with children and their parents outside of a regular school day.
Simply email junal@fultonscienceacademy.org with some suggested dates/times, as well as your students' name(s) and homeroom assignments. Ms. Unal will be in touch to confirm final details.
