The Year is Coming to a Close

What an unusual year this has been! Despite the ups and downs, our children are growing and happy...that's really what matters most.

This last week of the school year will be full of big emotions~excitement about summer, sadness about saying good bye, or uncertainty as we hear the board's decision about our school tomorrow. For the most part, children do best when we keep things as normal as possible. We will continue to keep our regular schedule Monday through Wednesday with some special events thrown in between to help students deal with big emotions that may come and close the year with some time for reflection and fun. Activities don't have to be elaborate, just offering a space for your child to express themselves is enough. Our Enhancement team will be offering some stations for classrooms to spend some time getting active, being creative, investigating, and dancing it out.

Try to consider each day this week what is important to your child and make some extra time for talking about those things. Drawing pictures, reading books together, and watching the clouds are easy to do activities that will help your child process and make sense of the unknown. Ask questions about what each day holds and which moments of joy your child will hold on to in his/her memory. Ask if there is a way that your child would like to send love to someone at APS. (art work, a letter, or craft) There is something very special about the family we have created at APS and this week will be full of solidifying those special memories forever.

Board Meeting Monday

The ACS Board will be meeting on Monday at 4 PM to discuss the decision for our Asheville Primary School and Asheville City Schools Preschool Program. The agendas are attached below. There are so many options on the table and it will be important to tune in for their final decision.

After hearing the decision, there will be a Google Meet sometime this week (time to be determined after the meeting) so that families can ask questions about how our plans may or may not change.

Please remember that our words are heard by little ears whether we know it or not. We have some amazingly passionate advocates at APS and we want to make sure that we are modeling how to advocate for what we believe in in a way that is respectful and focused on our priorities. Please make sure when advocating that you speak from what you know. There is a lot of misinformation floating around. Even if it is said with the best intentions, it derails efforts of advocacy. Speaking about your own personal experience and how your child has grown at APS has been very impactful and speaks from what you know. As we have seen, many of the best things about our school and the preschool program cannot be measured on a test. Your voice matters. If you have any questions prior to speaking at public comment or speaking online, please let administration know. As always, our staff will keep our focus on our students...the best part of our school and our number one priority.

Learning Commons~Free Books & Device Turn In

In order to complete end of year inventory, our Learning Commons, like other schools, will not be checking out books towards the end of school. We will still be having classes in the Learning Commons...just not checking out books. We wanted to make sure that students kept reading, so we are giving students free books that have been donated to our school. If your child brings home a book without a school bar code, it is a "keep forever" book. If you have any books at home that do have a school bar code, please drop them in the box at the school entrance or send in with your child.

All devices and hot spots will be turned in by Thursday, May 27th. Please call Ms. Vickie if you have questions.

THURSDAY~Last In Person Day for Montessori

On our last day of school, we will welcome back all of our students to campus for end of school year festivities. You are not required to come if you are remote, but you are invited to do so. Please make the decision that is best for your family. Remote students not attending will receive a package in the mail from APS with fun activities and well wishes for the summer. They will also be able to participate via Google Meet in activities on campus that day.

Thank you to the PTC for a special after lunch treat for students and staff!

School is 8-1:30 on Thursday. We would love for you to join us on the sidewalk, in the lower parking lot, and on the bus entrance sidewalk to cheer students on and celebrate their end of year. Bring your pom poms, bubbles, and signs to send them off with love and laughter. Parents are not permitted on campus due to Covid restrictions, but these spaces fall outside of the perimeter of the school campus. Please let us know if you have any questions and don't forget to wear a mask.

FRIDAY~Last Day for Preschool

Friday will be our last day for preschool students. We appreciate the special treat PTC will be giving our preschoolers on Friday...it's one of their favorites.

We would love for you to join our staff to send these little learners off for their summer as well. We will be on the front sidewalk to blow bubbles and dance into summer starting around 2:15.

Montessori MOVING UP Ceremonies

The Montessori Moving Up ceremony is held at the end of school and celebrates the students who are transitioning from one level to the next. Kindergarten students will transition to Lower Elementary and third grade students will transition to fourth grade. This is an important rite of passage for our young learners and we want to make this time special for them. It is symbolic of leaving one community and joining another. Students will read a special book this week called Invisible Strings. We are all forever connected by our experiences and what we have given each other. We will post the video read aloud in Wednesday's newsletter for you to share at home.

This year's moving up ceremonies will be streamed virtually for all to view. Please join in to hear about our amazing student leaders.
