Ripon Cathedral School Update

Week ending Friday 12th February

Pancake races

Big image
Shrove Tuesday was celebrated in the traditional Ripon way by entering children for the annual pancake races. A team of children ran the length of Kirkgate whilst flipping pancakes. They met with the Mayor and were looked after by Canon Ruth and Canon Elizabeth.

Year 3 Visit a Hindu Temple

As part of their work on Hinduism, this week Year 3 visited a Hindu temple in Bradford to bring their learning to life. During the visit children explored about the Hindu Gods, and researched the differences between a Hindu wedding and a Christian wedding. All the children were expected to take off their shoes and wash their hands prior to entering the temple and they were lucky enough to experience Hindu worship time.

This week the Year 5 children concluded their investigations into forces, looking at the effects of friction. We explored how the thickness and texture of string affects the distance balloons would fly across the classroom. We also investigated how different surfaces slow down vehicles at different rates. You wouldn't believe how surprisingly long it takes to move jelly cubes covered with oil using chop sticks.

It has been a busy half term full of exciting opportunities and great learning experiences for your children. This week we officially launch our new website, we hope you like it. To me it is an outward sign of the progress the school continues to make. Children are progressing well, lessons are fun and engaging and there is a really positive feel about school. I have had the pleasure of showing a number of prospective parents around recently and all have commented on how wonderful our school is. There is still room for improvement and we continue to pursue excellence in all we do but it is great to have affirmation of everyone's hard work.

We look forward to seeing you all on Monday 22nd February, until then have a safe and restful half term.

Buddy Bench- Get Designing

You may recall that our Buddy Bench purchased by the parents, has been made on our behalf by Henshaws and all that it needs now is a design to go on it. We have decided to run a competition to choose the design, and today all the children are bringing home an entry form. All they need to do is to get creative and return their entries to Mrs Bingham by Friday 26th February. The winning entry will be recreated on the bench by Henshaws and will then be on display in our playground.

As we have mentioned above, this week we have officially launched our new, and hopefully improved website. In redesigning our website, our main aim was to make all the information about the school readily available, easily accessible and attractive to view. We have reorganised the pages to make navigation clearer and added a link to our social media pages. In addition, it has been designed to be mobile and tablet friendly so you can access information in whatever way suits you best. We feel very pleased with the outcome and we hope you like it too. Please take a few minutes to have a look and tell us what you think. Your feedback is invaluable in ensuring that our website meets the needs of parents / carers and if we can improve it any way then we would love to hear from you.

Whilst reviewing the website it is an ideal opportunity for you to follow us on Twitter @riponcathschool and to like us on Facebook. This will ensure you keep constantly up to date with what is happening in school.

Parent workshop

Thank you to everyone who came to our parent workshop on Monday - we hope you found it useful and informative.

A copy of this presentation, together with other ones we have done can be found on our website under Parent Workshops or by clicking on the following link:

Parent View - please tell us what you think

As you are aware your views and feedback are incredibly important to us and we seek to obtain these in many ways. One of the methods used by both ourselves and Ofsted to judge how well we are doing is by viewing the questionnaires which parents / carers have completed on Parent View. However, so far we have only had 15 responses. Please could we strongly urge you to click on the link below to access the questionnaire and give us your views. It is a series of 12 questions and doesn't take long to complete and each parent / carer can update their views annually. If you would like to complete it but don't have access to a computer please speak with a member of the office staff who will be happy to help you.

This week we say farewell to Mrs Hazelwood who is starting her maternity leave after half term. We would like to wish her well and hope she enjoys a few weeks rest before the impending arrival. We look forward to meeting the new baby shortly!

School Policies

We are constantly reviewing and updating the policies we follow in school. These are added to the School Policies page of our website for parents / carers to view. Please continue to review this page regularly to keep up to date. This week we have added the following policies which may be of interest to you:

  • Early years
  • Supporting pupils with medical needs
  • Preventing radicalisation

Please click on the link below to go straight to the relevant page on our website.
