Knightly News
John F. Kennedy Learning Center
Week of February 22, 2016
Let's Start with Recognition and Acknowledgement for our Camelot Knights...
- Great job to our writing teachers Ms. Mora and Ms. Cosey, who have recently had great gains in student achievement. We appreciate your hard work and commitment to excellence!
- Huge shout out to our math department! Teachers are not only working on strategies...but ensuring engaging and hands-on activities are taking place in the classroom. No excuse for poor quality instruction!
- Kudos to our Saturday School bunch, your dedication is inspiring!
- Thank you to Ms. Carrillo, Ms. Blatnik, and Ms. Davis...who quite literally make the world (Camelot) go round! On a weekly basis they coordinate many initiatives and functions here at Kennedy, thank you for the role you continue to play.
- Last but not least, thank you Ms. Ajose and Ms. Bueno for all that you do. You are my right and left hands, that help with the everyday (unexpected) tasks.
Bright Spots in the Classroom!!!
Human Coordinate Graph Activity
I absolutely enjoyed this activity in Ms. Prieto's class. The students were engaged and moving around. Prior to the lesson Ms. Prieto labeled the x-axis and the y-axis (on the floor with tape), the students then located their ordered pairs. So cool!
Saturday School ROCKS
Students hard at work...nothing wrong with a little competition. Students competed against one another to show off their problem solving skills.
Strategies ARE Important
Ms. Chandra working one-on-one with a student. Utilizing excellent comprehension strategies for understanding.
Recent School Events
Valentine's Dance & Carnival
Wow! That's the word I would use to describe the Valentine's Dance. Not only did our PTA raise a significant amount of money (over $1,000) for both the carnival and the dance...but we found out that some of our students have some serious dance skills. Watch out Booker T, cause here they come!
Scholastic Book Fair
Thank you Ms. Davis for ensuring our students have an opportunity to add to their home libraries. Thank you teachers for also purchasing from the fair.
School Fundraiser...World's Finest Chocolate
We're off to a great start! Below you will see a poster of how our Kinder students are doing after just one week! Thank you as well to all of our staff members who are also participating! Watch out Ms. Davis!
Important Info
Data and Progress Monitoring
Please make sure that your students are profiling their progress, we will meet soon to review their trackers.
Extended Day Tutoring and Saturday School
Please make sure that your students are attending Extended Day tutoring or Saturday School (whichever is applicable). If you have problems with students attending, please reach out to parents and remind them that it is CRITICAL that their student attends. On Saturdays the front office will call parents as well.
Computer Lab Now Open on Saturdays (Grades 3-5)
The computer lab will now open for those students who do not necessarily need additional tutoring, but could benefit from extra practice. Please be sure to contact their parents and extend this invitation. This is an excellent opportunity to use some of our resources such as IStation, Achieve 3000, Reasoning Mind, Think Through Math, and so many more that we have at our disposal.
Shout Out Bulletin Board!!!
A new Shout Out bulletin board is in the making and will be ready midweek. Please be sure to stop by and write a "Shout Out" to acknowledge a staff member or a student. This is a great way to recognize one another!
