What's New?
It's been a busy two weeks back to school. Only one more week until Winter break! I hope you were all able to make it out to see the students Winter Sing performance. They have been practicing so hard this week and did a great job on stage Friday!
Enjoy your weekend,
Mrs. Green and Mrs. Johnson
Our Learning:
Math
We have continued our work with fractions the past couple weeks. The students examined two different ways to divide fractions, the sharing and grouping methods. They then came up with their own word problems for each of these methods.
This past week we have done a lot of work with real-world problems. The students were sent home with a packet on Thursday to practice their skills. We will review the packets on Monday and take our Chapter 4 test on Tuesday.
Reading:
In Reading this week, the students have continued to practice determining the main idea and using text evidence to support their thoughts. We worked in small groups with different nonfiction articles. Then we read aloud the book, The Buffalo are Back. Ask your child what new information they learned in this book and how it relates to our previous read aloud, The Wolves are Back.
Writing
In Writer's Workshop this week the students worked on a fun winter writing piece. We took pictures of the students and they created their very own snow globes! Then, they wrote a piece to go along with it explaining how they got trapped in the snow globe or a story about his/her life inside a snow globe. They were very into their stories and spent a lot of time writing and revising. Remember, your student can always share his/her work with you on google docs!
Social Studies
In Social Studies this week, we picked up where we left off at the end of the American Revolution. The war is over, but now America needs to decide on how to create a government. At first, the states didn't want a strong central government so they created the Articles of Confederation. Ask your child why the Articles failed...what were the weaknesses?
Ask Your Child About:
- The Winter Sing
- Mrs. Green's big news!
- The Buffalo are Back
- Who was our first president (Hint: it's NOT George Washington!)
Dates to Remember:
- December 17
- Field Trip to Covenant Village
- December 19
- Holiday Party
- December 22- January 2
- Winter Break - NO SCHOOL
- January 5
- School Resumes
