Webinar # 6: Title: Engaging Children with ASD in Social Interaction –Part 2

Description: Joel will discuss how to use his activities and resources in a virtual environment! Second of 2-part webinars endeavor to reinforce professional practice repertoires with 30 ready-to-use lessons, activities and games that can be immediately downloaded and put into use. Participants will be shown how to access Joel’s website, AutismTeachingStrategies.com and to download and use dozens of free printout games, activities, worksheets, slide presentations and lessons on the topics of conversation, relationships and emotional regulation. In both webinars, Joel will clearly explain the free materials, and with abundant pictures, he will show how to use them. The featured resources include games, drawing activities, and worksheets to promote learning about peers; picture card-matching activities to help find common ground in conversation; games and activities to troubleshoot diverse aspects of peer relationships; simple and effective ways to incorporate the use of video camera into social skills work. The featured resources are for children with high functioning autism ages 6 to 16.

Description: This seminar will address the need for and use of non-standardized assessment techniques to help determine when a child has a pragmatic language disorder. Language use is variable, culturally informed, and individualized. Therefore, those who look to define and describe a disorder need access to various strategies and methods to relate observed behaviors and outcomes to expected performance and necessary skills based on age and communication environment.

Description: Often children who have communication disorders participate in intervention activities to which target easily definable problems in semantics, morphology, and syntax. These deficits can in some cases, be confounded by associated disorders in language use. Alternatively, pragmatic language disorders may be the primary communication deficit. This seminar is designed to consider a variety of ways to provide intervention to children who are impacted by pragmatic disorders in many settings and with various skill levels.

These reporting and submission requirements will not be adjusted. LEAs are encouraged to keep detailed records concerning LEA closures and student absences. Detailed records regarding SPP 11 and 12 initial evaluation timelines and SPP 13 transition planning timelines may include but are not limited to LEA calendars/closures, student attendance records, Early Childhood Intervention (ECI) closures, comprehensive records of phone calls made or attempted, and copies of correspondence sent to/from parents or ECIs. LEAs can provide clarifications of any missed timelines through the data clarification process during the SPP data collection extension period in August 2020.
SPP 7 Entry and Exit reporting (using the state required Early Childhood Outcome Center’s (ECO) Childhood Outcomes Summary (COS) Form) will be reported using the most recent information available by the LEA obtained either prior to any school closures or obtained during provision of educational services during school closures. LEAs are encouraged to keep detailed records regarding limitations to data and impacts especially on Exiting data outcomes from the COVID-19 related school closures.
ESC Region 4’s has a free online course titled Child Outcomes Summary (COS) Process Module: Collecting and Using Data to Improve Programs for educators wanting to learn more about the COS SPP 7 process. The Texas Education Agency SPP 7’s website is located here.
In light of the current COVID - 19 crisis, all face-to-face sessions, trainings, and meetings hosted by ESC Region 11 are canceled through June 30, 2020. We are currently working on offering short (1 to 1 ½ hour) trainings via Zoom this June. I will update you as soon as we have additional details. The following is a list of professional development scheduled in the coming weeks.
