Announcements
- I hope you all had a wonderful holiday! Thank you for coming in during conferences! It was so nice to share your student's progress and successes.
- It's that time of year! Our class is in need of tissues. If you happen to pick up an extra box at the store, please send one in. Thank you!
- Thank you to all of the parents who placed orders for our Scholastic book order. Because of you, our class received 13 free books!
- Are you wondering how you can find a book that is "just right" for your child? There is a website/app called Scholastic Book Wizard. All you have to do is scan the book's bar code, and the reading level will appear! If you are unsure of your child's reading level, you can send me a note or email me! You can also find the level on the back of the books your child brings home in his or her book bags.
- Book bags (the ziploc with reading books in it) should come home almost every night and be sent back to school the next day. The books are sent home to reread for fluency and deeper understanding.
- Learning websites/apps: two fun, educational websites we have been using are happynumbers.com and Lexiacore5.com. Both of these websites can be found (among others) under the technology tab on my eBoard. If you would like your student to access these websites at home and your child does not remember his/her password, please let me know. Our class code for happy numbers is 353241.
- Due to popularity, I have instituted a sharing schedule. On Mondays, your child can sign up for another day to share during the week. On sharing day, students can tell us a story of something that happened to them, tell us something exciting they are looking forward to, or share a small item that can easily fit in their backpack. It's a great opportunity for students to learn about each other!
- Please see my eBoard for any past newsletters!
Curriculum
Fundations
We have completed Unit 5 of Fundations. Students mastered spelling and reading the glued sounds -am and -an. We are part way through Unit 6, and students are learning to distinguish the baseword from the suffix -s. Trick words are starting to get more challenging. When your student masters reading the trick word, please have your student practice spelling the trick word.
Reader's Workshop
First graders have been becoming stronger readers by learning about story structure. This includes the characters, setting, and events of the story. We looked more closely at each part of the story structure. While discussing characters, we also identified character traits. This helped us to know how a character may act later in the story. Readers know that they can tell more about the setting than whether it is just inside or outside. When we discussed the events of the story, students used words like first, next, then, and last to talk about the beginning, middle, and end of the story.
Math Workshop
Students completed Unit 3 about number stories. They have now begun Unit 4 on length and measuring. This unit offers many hands on and collaborate opportunities. It also focuses on addition facts, especially doubles facts and tens facts. Once students learn these facts, they can use what they know to help solve similar problems.
Writer's Workshop
Writers have moved on from small moment stories and are now writing "all about" books. This is really fun because students get to use their own knowledge of what they are experts about! I have noticed that students have increased their writing stamina through this unit! They are engaged and working independently to write down everything they know about a topic!
Social Studies and Science
First graders explored winter holidays and traditions. In the science lab, we will be beginning our next science unit on weather.
