Digital Literacies: Communicative

Communication in the 21st Century Classroom.

The communicative element of digital literacy states...

"We should be using technology to enhance our communications."

Too often communication skills are assumed, rather than explicitly taught to students. As the digital age expands, and is ever-present in the classroom, students need to learn how to effectively communicate online.

Digital Tools

The current generation of students is growing with technology integrated into their lives. This portfolio examines the use of digital tools in the classroom to promote communication.

The journey begins with simple pictures, then 140 characters (or less) and then combines the two concepts, culminating in creative writing.

Communication in the Digital Classrom

The following journey is based on using one iPad in the classroom.

The culminating task for students is titled: "Me in the World".

The parameters for this task are broad to allow students flexibility when creating their project. In the section, Classroom Resources, follow the link to Google Drive to access the supporting documents.

The Tools

Using Instagram, Twitter and Penzu students explore their world and how they fit into it. Through pictures, short sentences and then journal entries students learn to engage in communication in an authentic and organic way.

Project Adaptations

This portfolio was primarily directed toward an elementary panel audience. However, it could easily be adapted for secondary or post secondary by altering the expectations and culminating task.

For use of the tools in the workplace, please watch this short video.

I chose to learn and experiment with Instagram, Twitter and Penzu because prior to this course I had not used any of these tools. Yes, it's true, I had not used any of them. They are simple to use, widely in use and thus I feel integrating them into the classroom is both timely and pedagogically appropriate.

Thank you Melanie for reviewing my project and providing me with feedback.

Warren, your knowledge of digital tools is amazing. Thanks for introducing me to Jing.
