Innovation Workshop
Students in Grades 5-7 were invited to participate in an innovation experience for the past two weeks. 10 students spent all day on Saturday, May 25th, some lunch hours over the past two weeks learning about innovation with Dr. Ethan Eagle (from University of Maryland) and Mrs. Westlake (middle school math teacher). They discussed and learned:
- what it means to collaborate
- what it means to communicate and to listen to each other's ideas, and
- what skills need to be developed in working in a group.
Yesterday morning, the students presented their ideas and proposals on how to make our school a better learning environment. Here is a summary of their proposals:
- One group proposed more group sport type games for future field days- Students gave the rationale and data to support their idea.
- Another group talked about how to make middle school classes more engaging by allowing more group work but admitted that they prefer the teachers to establish the groups at first (until they know how a group really functions, because if they let them work with their friends, sometimes the work doesn't get done).
- The third group would like more differentiated recess. They would like a space for students to bring and play board games, an outdoor sensory center, more organized games in the gym to choose from, or a place to chill out and just talk or read.
They all did a phenomenal job sharing the process they used to make their proposals and then presenting them. Some thought through more than others, but this is the first try at this. Following the feedback about the presentations, the parents met with Mrs. Murphy, Mrs. Grue, Mrs. Westlake, and Dr. Eagle about how to apply what the students have learned in a regular school setting and discussed where do we go from here and what are the plans in moving forward with an innovation officer on student council, an innovation committee that will meet once an month to discuss ideas that have been brainstormed and how to use the innovation lab we hope to create this summer. They talked about more STEM and technology push into the regular classes and the feedback from the AdvancED STEM Accreditation report. It was a fantastic conversation- and more to come!
Congratulation to Jonathan Moon, Liam Kehoe, Wilson Evans, Alexandra Orange, Carla Lonergan, Dominic Santiago, Blayk Ayestes, Freddie Letzer and Alexandra Letzer for having the courage to try something new, giving up a holiday weekend and coming out today to present. We are so proud of each of them!
Many thanks to Dr. Ethan Eagle and Mrs. Westlake for taking time on their "days off" to create this experience for our students and to the parents who saw this through with fidelity and shared their thoughts and ideas with us! Please see photo's attached and look forward to hearing more about the innovation ideas that will be coming to our school next year!
Welcome Committee!
The Resurrection-St. Paul School Welcoming Committee is a group of current RSPS parents who volunteer to host new families during their first year at RSPS.
There are so many exciting and wonderful things happening at RSPS that a new family cannot possibly learn about all of them without some one-on-one guidance from a current family. We hope you will join us in sharing all that makes our school so special!
Each year the Current Families are paired with New Families who have children in the same grade(s). These pairings are made over the summer and shared as soon as possible. Email addresses and phone numbers are shared between the families so they can contact each other during the summer and throughout the school year.
The Welcoming Committee Host Families should be prepared to answer routine school questions and feel comfortable in referring the new family to the proper school personnel for questions that are not routine. We would like for our host families to be open, honest, warm and welcoming. Let them know you are available to answer any questions they may have at any time during the summer or school year via phone or email. Be proactive and tell your New Family about upcoming events and details so they feel comfortable attending and feel “in the know” instead of feeling “out of the loop.”
The RSPS Welcoming Committee Coordinator will jointly introduce the Host Family to the New Family and keep in touch with Host Families and New Families periodically throughout the year. Thank You!!!
