ARCTIC ADVENTURE: SNOW MUCH TO READ!
PTA Fall Book Fair September 23 to 27
Burrrrrr! The PTA is hosting the Scholastic Book Fair "Arctic Adventure: Snow Much to Read!" next week. We'll be open daily Monday through Friday, closing at 1:30pm Friday.
The Book Fair is an exciting event, and benefits our students in so many ways. Reading increases your child's knowledge and vocabulary, and supports their emotional growth. Bringing new books into our school gives your child the opportunity to become excited to pick out and read their own books. This is also one of our biggest events of the year, because of YOU! This past school year we were able to give $15,000 back to our classrooms!! Thank you for your support!
Our online fair is happening now through 9/27. This is another great option if you aren't able to shop on campus; all books will be shipped directly to your home. Please use this link if you would like to shop nowhttps://bookfairs.scholastic.com/bookfairs/cptoolkit/homepage.do?method=homepage&url=hickselementaryschool1
Scholastic is now offering eWallet, a cash free method to shop. It's simple to use and your student won't have to handle any money! Simply create an account, add funds, and shop away! Any money not used will be put back on your credit card. You may register now at our online fair page https://bookfairs.scholastic.com/bookfairs/cptoolkit/homepage.do?method=homepage&url=hickselementaryschool1
Be sure to pop by the book fair during these special events:
Tuesday morning (9/24) you're invited to eat donuts and shop from 7:15am to 7:45am during "Donuts with Grownups."
Wednesday (9/25) is the traditional Lunch with a Loved One. Stop by for a lunch visit with your little one and then come shop in the library.
Please direct any questions to Katie Taylor katietaylor0228@gmail.com.
We look forward to another successful year. See you at the Book Fair!!

Volunteer Opportunities
The Great October Pumpkin Patch Challenge
Hicks Elementary will be selling pumpkins before school for $1.00 (cash only) as fundraiser. Students may buy as little or as many pumpkins as they like each day. The money raised will come back to our school in various ways including our school spirit sticks that students will be able earn. The class that collects the most pumpkins in each grade level will be awarded extra recess, popsicles and the students can cheer on their teacher as they smash Ms. Nelson in the face with pumpkin pie! What a great way to build classroom community while having some fun, friendly competition on our campus. The great pumpkin patch challenge will begin October 1st and conclude on October 30th. The winning class will be announced on October 31st.
LISD Destination Imagination (Learn more about DI at Arbor Creek MS on 9/17/19 6:45-8:15)
LISD Destination Imagination
How it Works
1) What is Destination Imagination?
a) Extra-curricular program that works with small teams of up to 7 students to teach them how to use their creativity to develop innovative solutions to complex problems.
b) Emphasis is on self-directed education, team work, problem solving, critical thinking and creativity.
c) Solutions are showcased in a local regional tournament on in late Feb. or early March at a local high school
d) Top performers compete at the state tournament in early April – the 2020 state tournament is at University of Texas at Arlington.
e) Top performers at State go on to DI Global Finals at the end of May in Kansas City, MO.
2) What problems do they solve?
a) Each student team chooses 1 problem (referred to as a challenge) of the 6 produced by DI each year: technical, science, engineering, fine arts, improvisation or service learning.
b) An additional challenge for early learners (k-2nd grade) is provided. This level is called Rising Stars and is non-competitive. The RS teams’ DI season ends at the regional tournament.
c) Students will also solve an Instant Challenge – a “think on your feet” challenge that will be kept confidential until the tournament.
3) Who, What, Where and When?
a) Teams are school and grade based: Rising Stars is K-2nd; Elementary is 3rd- 5th; Middle is 6th-8th and Secondary is 9th-12th.
b) Most teams are managed by parent volunteers, trained at no cost to them. Without these volunteers, there are no teams.
c) Teams meet outside of school hours on a schedule agreed upon by the team managers and other team parents.
d) Most teams meet in the home of the team manager or other team members. Some teams arrange to meet at their school, a local library or other facility such as a rec center or church.
e) Rising Stars teams meet once a week for 1 to 1 ½ hours.
f) Competitive teams (all others) start out meeting once a week for 1 ½ hours to 2 hours and may increase that as the tournament nears.
g) Team managers act as facilitators and educators – they do not do the work for the kids. Additional time will be required for planning and post meeting activities.
4) What is the cost?
a) LISD pays for the team membership and the tournament fees. The membership includes program materials (a handbook) with meeting plans, challenge summaries and rules. Additional support and resources are provided on the local TVNC DI regional website at www.tvncdi.org.
b) LISD also pays for some, not all, of the expenses for teams that advance to State and Globals.
c) Costs for supplies and team workshops (not TM training) are funded by the teams. This cost is minimal. Some school PTAs have funding for these expenses.
d) Coordination of the program is handled by the LISD DI Coordinator, Robin Napier, in the Schools and Student Activities Division not by the individual schools. Volunteers at some of the schools assist in organizing teams.
e) Comprehensive team manager training is provided by regional trainers, in person, by webinar and video and online through DI, Inc., at no cost.
5) When does it start?
a) Returning teams will start meeting in September.
b) New teams will form throughout August and September. They begin meeting as soon as the team is formed and a TM has been identified and cleared by the LISD volunteer background check.
c) Teams that plan to compete at the tournament must be registered for the tournament by mid-December – specific date to be determined.
