Dolly Parton's Imagination Library
Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is a free book gifting program that mails high-quality books to children from birth until their 5th birthday regardless of their family’s income. “The single most significant factor influencing a child’s early educational success is an introduction to books and being read to at home prior to beginning school,” states the National Commission on Reading.
Financial Donations made through the Blue River Community Foundation have allowed this wonderful program to be offered in our community! Each month, registered children who live in Southwestern’s school district will receive an age appropriate book in the mail, addressed to them, at no cost to the family. Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library has partnered with the American Printing House for the Blind, Inc. to make many wonderful books in the program available in braille and audio format for children who are blind or visually impaired in order for all children to benefit from these wonderful books.

School Counselor Corner
As an educator and parent, I have seen firsthand the importance of establishing routines both in a learning setting and in my home. Given the current situation of the world, our homes are also now our learning and working settings for many families, so established routines can benefit everyone. If you and your family already have established routines- great! You may just need to tweak some of your routine, such as a slightly later start to the day. Other routines, such as "learning time" during the day and how that will be managed will need to be considered, though.
There is a lot of research available that speaks to the importance and benefits of setting routines, but perhaps the most important one currently is that routines establish the feeling of normalcy and security. With so many things changing in our world right now, life as we know it may feel so uncertain. All of the uncertainty and chaos of the world can cause fear and panic in people of all ages. Having a routine can help everyone find something consistent, something that doesn't change by the hour. Another benefit is that routines establish what is valued and important in the family and teaches expectations. As families develop routines for when, where and how their children are to complete school work and continue their education, it sends the message that what they are learning is very important and that they can continue to give their best and learn outside of the classroom setting. They can be problem-solvers and find flexibility in when and how they learn. Below is an example of what a daily schedule may look like in your home:
Tuesday-Thursday
- Get ready for your day: shower/bathe; eat breakfast; brush your teeth
- Check into eLearning: review your assignments for the day; make a list of how you want to prioritize them or an order for classwork to be completed (Assignments posted at 9:00am)
- Start learning!
- Pause for a mid-morning snack: make it healthy to fuel your brain and body
- Back to learning!
- Free read for 20 minutes.
- Practice math facts for 10 minutes (younger students); take a virtual tour of a park or college campus or watch a TED talk on an interesting topic (older students)
- Eat lunch.
- Exercise for 20 minutes: take a walk outside, do some yoga or meditation, take a bike ride
- Back to learning to complete assignments!
- Final check that all assignments are complete and/or list prepared for the next day.
- Clean up work space.
- Complete chores.
- NOW you can play or rest!
Feel free to use sample schedule or change it to better accommodate you! Remember, we are all in this together!

A Note from the Nurse
New for the 2020 - 2021 school year, ALL students in preschool through 12th grade will be required to have 2 Hepatitis A vaccines. The Hepatitis A vaccination requires 2 shots in order to be considered compliant. These 2 shots must be given no sooner than 6 months apart.
For example, if at student receives the first Hepatitis A vaccination on February 1, 2020 the student cannot get the second vaccination until August 1, 2020 or after. Therefore, it is important that you get this series started as soon as possible.
If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Vise at rvise@swshelby.k12.in.us.
