Burton Street News and Information
May 2022
Dear families,
May is such an exciting (and busy) month at Burton Street. It is nutty to think that as of today, there are 32 days of school left! This is a great time of year spent reflecting and celebrating all that our students have accomplished!
This past week we celebrated Teacher Appreciation Week. An enormous thank you to the PTA and supportive parents and guardians for honoring our teachers and staff! There is no doubt that Burton Street educators are truly remarkable. As you are all well aware, the staff here at Burton Street is unbelievably hardworking, passionate, dedicated and innovative!
The month of May will bring a lot of fun to Burton Street, including the start of our 4th grade community walks, 3rd grade field trips, spring Book Fair, Mental Health Awareness Week and Wellness Day, an author visit for all students, Raise Craze closing celebration and of course Memorial Day - the official 'kickoff to summer.'
As we turn the corner towards the end of the school year there is an increase in fun events on and off campus, please be sure to read teacher newsletters/emails regarding classroom and building-wide events.
Thank you for your continued support!
Mrs. Kara May
New Playground Equipment
The new equipment is a priceless addition, not only for Burton Street students, but the entire community, as all differently-abled individuals will have the opportunity to experience and enjoy the playground space.
The Burton Street community is committed to installing a safe and accessible pathway for students to enjoy the new equipment, to be named "Hazel's Path." This pathway will be dedicated to the beautiful Burton Street graduate, Hazel Shaw. "Hazel's Path" will be funded via money raised through PTA fundraising, donations, and support from Hazel's Hope. Hazel's Hope is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing "families of children with special needs the adaptive equipment they need." If you are interested in donating money specifically for "Hazel's Path" please reach out to Kara May (kmay@caz.cnyric.org).

Mental Health Awareness Week
Next week (May 10th-16th) starts off our celebration of Mental Health Awareness Week!
The district Mental Health Team has worked hard to plan wellness events for our students on May 13th and bring a spirit week across the district. We will continue to have ongoing conversations with our students about ways we can practice mental wellness and ways we can keep our minds and bodies happy and healthy! We will be discussing these mindful strategies over the announcements next week and during Hang 10 Time.
We would love for as many students and families to participate as possible!
RAISE CRAZE
The Cazenovia Republican published a wonderful article on Raise Craze last week. You can read it here.
Because the students raised $10,000, they will be rewarded by having me kiss a (real) pig!
In addition, because the students raised $15,000, they will get to slime district superintendent, Mr. DiFulvio!

Happy Mother's Day
Our students are very lucky to have such wonderfully supportive people in their lives. While we celebrate 'Mother's Day' on the calendar this weekend, may this special day honor the dedicated caregivers within each different family structure!
Happy Mother's Day to all of the mothers, fathers, grandparents, adoptive parents, step-parents, family members and foster parents who are raising our young children!
