Our Mission:
A Note from Miss Pape
Dear Lincoln Families,
Welcome to 2023! I hope that you all had a wonderful holiday time with your family. We are so glad to have your students back at school! Our students are jumping right back to revisiting schoolwide expectations, learning, and ACCESS testing for our multilingual learners has begun! Our staff recently engaged in 2 very meaningful professional development days. The afternoon of Wednesday, January 11th was spent looking at behavior data and supports within our building. Today, January 17th was spent learning about different curricular resources. Many of our K-5th staff were here at Lincoln learning about differentiation with our new Illustrative Math curricular resources. We are so incredibly grateful for the time spent learning together!
As Valentine's Day is quickly approaching, please remember that students are allowed to bring Valentines for the whole class and that Valentines cannot include candy or food per the District 15 Food Allergy Policy.
Coming up very soon we have our PTA Fun Fair! We are so excited about this event. The PTA has worked so hard on planning for this special event. We hope you will be able to join us on Monday, January 30th from 6-8pm. Wristbands can be purchases ahead of time (preferred) using the fliers being sent home with your child tomorrow. This exciting event is also a fundraiser and all profits will go straight back to the PTA and, in turn, our Lincoln Lions. The PTA just approved a few different exciting things for our students coming up and that could not happen without the support of events like this one. Thank you, PTA!
Finally, I'd love to welcome Ms. Tala Barnett and Ms. Brittina Whiting to Lincoln School. Ms. Barnett is our building Itinerant Teacher who will be helping with many different classes and students here. She recently finished student teaching at Marion Jordan School. Ms. Whiting will be our new Occupational Therapist and will join us at Lincoln 4 days per week! Welcome to both!
Best,
Ellen Pape

Cold Weather: Please Dress Appropriately
Cold Weather is nearing. Please send students to school dressed for the weather. Students must have on winter boots and snow pants to play in the snow at recess time. With the chilly temperatures, please remember to send your child to school with the appropriate winter clothing (Hats, Gloves, Scarves, Winter Coat, Snow Pants, Snow Boots). Please contact your child's teacher or the office if you need assistance providing the appropriate winter clothing for your child.
Arrival and Recess in D15
Students generally line up outside for arrival and go outside for recess every day, so they should dress appropriately for the weather. Exceptions are made only when a child brings a doctor's note excusing him/her from outdoor recess.
Staff members provide playground supervision. If students are not following behavior expectations, a staff member will address the behavior with the student(s). Based on the behavior, the child may speak to an administrator.
Cold weather: Indoor recess is determined based on the following guidelines:
- If the temperature outside, together with the wind chill, is below 0°F, all students will remain inside for the entire lunch hour.
- If the temperature outside, together with the wind chill, is between 0°-10°F, the preferred procedure is a rotation of 20 minutes for lunch, a 20-minute outdoor recess, and a 20-minute indoor recess. However, at the principal's discretion, students may be kept inside for the entire lunch hour.
- If the temperature outside, together with the wind chill, is above 10°F, students will have regular outdoor recess.

Metra Contest– “Stay Safe and Stay Off Train Tracks!”
Metra has launched its 16th Annual Safety Poster and Essay Contest, asking students across Metra's service area to illustrate through posters and essays the importance of safe behaviors near the railroad. This year's theme is "Stay Safe, Stay Off Train Tracks." Deadline for entries is Friday, Jan. 20, 2023.
The Safety Poster and Essay Contest asks students to take on an advocacy role and communicate the importance of safety near the tracks. This year's theme: "Stay Safe, Stay Off Train Tracks"emphasizes the importance of being aware of your surroundings and personal safety when near railroad tracks, platforms, and crossings, which can be extremely dangerous.
More information can be found on the Metra Contest website.
Student Absences & Tardies
We start our day learning at 8:25 am every day. Please be sure that your student arrives on time to school each day. Students have an arrival window of 8:10-8:25 am each day. Students who arrive on a late bus due to the bus driver shortage are marked as "excused" in our attendance system as the late buses are currently out of our control.

Cold & Flu Information
Dear Parent or Guardian:
Cold and flu season is upon us and we are seeing a large number of students with flu symptoms. To prevent widespread flu in the school, we recommend that your child stay home from school if experiencing flu or cold symptoms. To decide whether or not to send your child to school, please consider the following guidelines.
Consider keeping your child at home for an extra day of rest and observation if he or she has any of the following symptoms:
Very stuffy or runny nose and/or a cough
Mild sore throat (no fever, no known exposure to strep)
Headache
Mild stomach ache
Chills
General malaise or feelings of fatigue, discomfort, weakness or muscle aches
Definitely keep your child at home and consider seeking medical attention if he or she has any of these symptoms:
Fever (greater than 100 degrees by mouth. Your child may return to school only after his or her temperature has been consistently below 100 degrees, by mouth, for a minimum of 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medications)
Vomiting (even once)
Diarrhea
Frequent congested (wet) or croupy cough
Shortness of breath
Lots of nasal congestion with frequent blowing of nose
To help prevent the flu and other colds, please teach your children good hygiene habits:
Wash hands frequently
Do not touch eyes, nose or mouth
Cover mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing, use a paper tissue, throw it away and then wash hands
Avoid close contact with people who are sick
The flu shot is one of the best ways to prevent illness from the seasonal influenza virus. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends adults and children receive the flu vaccine each year. Yearly flu vaccination is needed because immunity against the flu wears off over time. In addition, the flu virus strains often change, so the vaccine also changes from year-to-year in order to match the flu viruses expected to be circulating in the community.
Colds and Flu are the most contagious during the first 48 hours. A child who has a fever should remain at home until “fever free” for a minimum of 24 hours.
Often when a child awakens with vague complaints (the way colds and flu begin), it is wise to observe your child at home for an hour or two before deciding whether or not they should attend school. Your child should be physically able to participate in all school activities upon return to school. Keeping a sick child at home will help minimize the spread of infections and viruses in the classroom.
Sincerely,
School Health Services
