Math Facts
Has your child shown mastery of any math facts yet? How many levels has your child completed? Has (s)he earned the addition or subtraction triangle for the class quilt?
Get those math facts moving- make flash cards, download an app, play a math fact car game - students who know their math facts can concentrate more on math concepts and problem solving. Make a goal and work toward achieving that goal regarding math facts.
Language Arts
As we continue to read nonfiction text, you can help your child summarize text in a concise way. You can ask your child questions based on the 5 W's and H question words.
- Who
- What
- When
- Where
- Why
- How
Then students can use the answers to the above question words to create a summary statement about the nonfiction reading.
Also, take a look at this Fist or Five Rubric to help summarize nonfiction text (click here).
Finally, students have been exploring the 5 different types of text structure - learning to identify the structure and what organizer to utilize to aid in comprehension. Ask your child about the 5 types of text structure.
- cause and effect
- description
- chronological
- problem and solution
- compare and contrast
Science/Social Studies
Students are completing the final steps on researching a Famous Marylander and writing a speech in 1st person to present during our living wax museum. The wax museum will be "open" in the cafeteria on Wednesday, December 20 from 2:45-3:30. Please join us and browse to learn something new about a person from Maryland. We can't wait to see you.
See detailed information in your child's Thursday folder and/or click here.
In Science, students are creating a 'new animal' for a specific region of Maryland. They must incorporate external structures for the animal to survive in the assigned region.
Newsela
Give it a try - it's a great way to maintain their reading strategies when they are home sick or on a snow day/delay as well as the weekend.
Ten Marks / Common Core
Has your child accessed his/her account lately?
This is another great way to maintain your child's math skills when home sick or on a snow day/delay or the weekend.
Parents can also create a parent account in order to be able to see how their child is doing. Ask you child's teacher if you need more information regarding how to create the parent account.
