Mrs. Cerros's 4th grade class
August 22, 2017
Welcome!
We are off to a great start! The school year has already started with much excitement over the solar eclipse. I am looking forward to many more celebrations throughout the year!
Spelling
I am taking a new direction with spelling this year that I feel will be beneficial to the students as they become life long spellers. I am seeking to teach the students spelling patterns and syllabication rather than memorizing a list of random words for a test. That being said, our classroom focus will be on learning these patterns in words to then use them in and outside of the classroom. We will not have a weekly spelling list to study at home or a weekly spelling test. We are learning the VCCV (vowel, consonant, consonant, vowel) pattern this week, such as, rascal.
Social Studies
We are working through some introductory geography skills in social studies. Our first unit focuses on land forms in the U.S. I will send out information next week about an edible land form project to be completed at home. There are great ideas on Pinterest if you would like to explore some possibilities.
Math
We have started our first unit on place value. You will see the first homework page coming home tonight. It is copied on gold paper. It should be easy to spot. The students understand that it should be completed and turned in tomorrow morning when they arrive.
Students are allowed to have water bottles in the classroom. Also, it is probably a good idea for students to bring a jacket as it can get really cold in our room at times.
