Presidential Powers

Powers and Roles of the President of the United States

Commander-In-Chief demonstrated

Commander-In-Chief

One of the very many roles that a man or woman takes on when he/she becomes president is being Commander-In-Chief of the military. The Commander-In-Chief roles include relatively anything that has to do with the United States military. The actual definition of the Commander-In-Chief is, the person or body that exercises supreme operational command and control of a nation's military forces or significant elements of those forces. The article I chose explained a situation where President Obama is addressing the Syria crisis. It highlights President Obama's ability to use or to not use his ability to use the military and to command it to attack a certain country or to not attack a certain country.

Chief Diplomat

Another one of the roles that the president obtains when he takes office is Chief Diplomat. The definition of a diplomat according to dictionary.com, is a person appointed by the national government to conduct official negotiations and maintain political economic and social relations with another country or countries as well as someone who is tactful and skillful in managing delicate situations and handling people. The article from USA today that I chose outlines an event where President Obama seeks a meeting with Pope Francis. This article outlines how the president is able to travel to different countries and meet with the leaders of those countries in order to discuss treaties etc.

Chief of State

When the president is sworn in he becomes the Chief of State. The definition of this particular role is the titular head of a nation, a president or a king, according to http://www.thefreedictionary.com/chief+of+state. This role has a definition that simply says that the president is in charge. I chose this article (the 2nd inauguration of President Barak Obama) to demonstrate when exactly President Obama was guaranteed those rights to run our country for his second term.

Chief Legislator

Another role that the president has during his term(s) is Chief Legislator. The definition of a legislator is one who makes, approves, or gives laws it also defines a legislator as being on who is a member of a legislative body. When the President is given the title of "Chief Legislator" that simply means that he/she is in charge of approving any and all laws passed by Congress. I chose this particular article because it is a current event that actually happens on the due date of this project. The amnesty bill is a piece of literature that President Obama is trying to pass as a law. According to the US Immigration Amnesty website this bill would "...forgive their (illegal aliens) acts of illegal immigration and implicitly forgives other related illegal acts such as driving and working with false documents. The result of an amnesty is that large numbers of foreigners who illegally gained entry into the United States are rewarded with legal status (Green Card) for breaking immigration laws. I chose this article because it shows that Obama is demonstrating his ability to create a law and get it approved and maybe passed.

Chief of Citizens

The definition of this 5th and final role of the president is that the president is supposed to be the face of the people and represent his people as the popular leader. This article states that the president is supposed to be trustworthy and work for the public's best interests. He is supposed to do and say and think things that are in the best interests of his people. I chose this article from the Huffington Post because it displays an event that took place while Obama was in office where he had the opportunity to do the right thing for the American people and help rebuild their lost city and lost lives.
