SOS- Signs of Suicide Curriculum in Freshmen Seminars
During this challenging year, school staff are working to teach students about mental health and how to seek help if they are worried about themselves or a friend. Douglas County Middle and High Schools are using a program called SOS Signs of Suicide. The program teaches students about this difficult topic and encourages them to seek help. SOS has been used by thousands of schools for over 20 years. Studies have shown that it effectively teaches students about depression and suicide while reducing the number of students' self-reported suicide attempts. We encourage you to visit www.sossignsofsuicide.org/parent for information on warning signs for youth suicide, useful resources, and some of the key messages students will learn.
If you have any questions or concerns about your child's participation in this program please contact your student's counselor.

The Dangerous Truth About Marijuana
"You wouldn't understand, you don't know what it is like to be a teenager!" Has your student ever uttered this phrase to you? Today's teens are facing new and sometimes dangerous challenges that we never have. One of these "new" challenges is the potential exposure and use of high potency THC marijuana products. Students may turn to substance use as a measure to cope with the stressors that they experience in their lives, without fully understanding the severe consequences of their actions. We invite our community to learn more about the high potency THC marijuana products and their detrimental effects on the developing teenage brain from guest speaker, Laura Stark, who tragically lost her high school aged son after a psychotic break from using high potency THC marijuana.
