Mrs. Hladun's Tidings

A big thank you to all the families who attended one of our two Back To School Nights - TK, K and 1 was before school started and grades 2-5 hosted this past week. If you weren't able to attend, please reach out to your teacher to get any important info you may have missed. I also hosted a "Principal's Message" welcome last week (and a more modified version at TK-1 night) are encouraged to take a look at it here:

On thing I shared both evenings was the story of "The Struggle." I spoke honestly when I said I read it the first time and almost cried...I have two boys of my own (grades 4 and 10) and too often I'm the fixer - it's easier, I'm tired, they are tired, and it seems like a quick way to get on with it...I always remind myself that I'll do better next time (hah!). But this story reminded me that my boys (and our students) need to struggle so they can believe for themselves that they can persevere through tough tasks.

This week alone, I've had the joy to work with dozens of kids who were anxious, nervous, sad (aka - struggling!) for any number of reasons, but we worked it out and THEY WERE SUCCESSFUL...forgotten lunch boxes (hello hot lunch line!), sad because they didn't land on the color they wanted by the end of the day (let's pick a new seat; we can do better tomorrow), sitting alone because their friend is playing with others (let's find a new game/friend group), crying because they have to come to school (heads up - it's the law! :), unsure about where to line up (we've got folks at the ready to show them!) ...our team is here to help! It's okay for your kids to feel sad, disappointed, frustrated, or a little worried...when they work through those moments, your child realizes that he/she IS capable, IS prepared, and CAN do it...and that is a gift.

Remember to celebrate your child for things that come easy, but celebrate them AS MUCH or MORE when they work hard to overcome obstacles or succeed when it was tough. That grit and determination will take them far! Here are some resources and language parents can use when teaching grit, perseverance and determination.

LCES Choir Contracts - due by 3 pm on Fri., 8/30

Contracts for the 2019-20 LCES Choir are now available! All contracts are due to Mrs. Adams by 3 pm on 8/30. You can drop them in Mrs. Adams room or in the office and we'll put it in Mrs. Adam's mailbox. You can find the Choir program details & contract in our calendar or click here.

Food Service Updates

The district is committed to offering the healthiest options for school breakfast and lunch. To that end, Food Service is moving to just offering chocolate milk on Fridays. In order to reduced foods with added sugars, you'll also see an emphasis on offering many types of fruits and vegetables, including produce from local farms!

Food service is looking for teachers, parents, community members that are interested in being on some panels/focus groups regarding food service offerings over the next year. Stay tuned for info on these opportunities to have your voice heard!

At the bottom of every Colt Connection, there is a link to the food service page - where you can access monthly menus and add funds to your child's lunch account from your phone/computer!

Colt Pride Fridays!

Every Friday is a Colt Pride day! We love it all - new items, vintage Colt Gear, homemade items, Zebra gear, and blue & yellow!

Our PTC has an online store to order spirit items - - all items are direct shipped to you! There is FREE shipping from 8/23-9/9. You can get t-shirts, sweatshirts, pants, bags and youth and adult sizes! There are a ton of options! Here is a copy of the paper flier, too:

Come On In - All Adults Need Visitor Badges!

Big thanks to our families/guardians for popping into the office to get visitor's badges before entering campus in the morning. A reminder that we also need you to sign out when you leave!

Thank you for supporting this policy so we can ensure we know who is on campus and promote student safety.

My team doesn't always know friend from foe - please sign in and come onto campus in the morning instead of hanging out at the perimeter gates - it creates stress for the kids and adults who are trying to get the day off on the right foot (see the Tidings above!). I promise you that if your child is having a tough moment, we will help them get through it. If it's a REALLY tough morning, you can always call to check on your child, or you may find that you hear from the teacher or an administrator to let you know all is well!

Live Scan Service at PTC Playground Night!

Per our district policy, in order to chaperone a field trip or to work with students without direct supervision from a teacher, volunteers need to be LiveScanned and have a current TB test on file. A LiveScan is good in any school (elementary, middle & HS) in WPUSD and does not expire, so you can take care of it now and never need to worry about it again!

Sunset Notary is provided the LiveScan service on our campus during our Back To School Nights to our families for a great price. How awesome is that - it's less expensive, no appointment is needed & there's no driving around! We appreciate their service!!! They'll also be at our Playground Night on Fri., 8/30.

Next Steps:
1. print and fill out the LiveScan form: (copies will be available on site, too)
2. come to campus during Playground night and look for the Sunset Notary booth

- Playground Night is on Friday, 8/30; Sunset will be here from 5-7:30 pm

3. bring your payment (see details below)
4. bring your driver's license or state issued ID

The DOJ charges $32 to process a LifeScan and Sunset Notary charges $17 for their processing fee. Sunset Notary can take cash ($49), check ($49) or debit/credit ($51)

Online Emergency Cards & First Day Paperwork

We have received feedback that the online Parent Portal to complete Emergency Cards was not super user friendly for some families. We'll share that feedback with our district office with the hope that the process continues to improve as the district works through the 'kinks.'

Students who did not have an emergency card completed had a paper version sent home last week. Please send them back to us ASAP! Students may not be able to use school's computers until the cards are completed, as part of the Emergency Card process includes an agreement with the District's Internet Use policy.

High Temperatures, Air Quality and Recess

It has been a warm start to the year. We will be monitoring the temperature and air quality carefully each day. In the event that the air is deemed 'unhealthy for sensitive groups,' we will make an indoor play space available for students. If the air quality is in the 'unhealthy' or higher range, we will offer only an indoor recess. If your child is in a sensitive group, please be in touch with the office and your child's teacher so he can best support him/her.

Parking, Drop Off & Pick Up

It will be very congested the first days and weeks of school. Please visit our website to view a map that identifies appropriate areas for parking and areas where you can safely drop your child off/pick your child up.

We provide supervision from 7:55-8:10 am and again from 2:40-3 pm (1:40-2 on Mondays). We find it is less congested before 8 am and after 2:50 pm.

This year, you'll see some new signage out and more student greeters ready to help your child out of the car. We ask you to keep two thing in mind - stay in your lane and pull all the way forward to make drop off/pick up as easy as possible!
