Student Y Chapter is Working Hard
2018-19 Student Y Chapter Officers
President- Audrey G.
Vice President- Eli C.
Service Chair- Campbell S.
Secretary- Jaleia H.
Public Relations- Samuel G.
The FMS Student Y Chapter (formerly Y Club) has started up again for the 2018-2019 school year. Our goal for the Student Y is to give kids in our school the opportunity with service learning, civic engagement, and personal development. With KYA (Kentucky Youth Assembly) just around the corner we have already started preparing for our bills/resolution. One group is working on a resolution to educate people about the dangers of human trafficking in Kentucky, and the other is preparing legislation to advocate for equal access to feminine care products. Bill sponsors will meet on Tuesday, September 11 after school in Mrs. Gilbert's room.
Students planning to attend KYA (November 4-6) need to pay a $25 deposit by today to hold their reservation!
We have already had two full club meetings this year and if you didn’t attend those meetings it is important that you stay up to date on when we have our meetings. Our next officer's meeting will be Wednesday, September 12, 2018 after school in Mrs. Gilbert's room. Our next full club meeting will be Wednesday, September, 19 after school in Mrs. Gilbert's room.
We also have many in club activities for members, including Service Committee, Debate Skills, and Bill/Resolution Practice. Our Service Committee, run by our service chair, Campbell, has started and is in need of members. In the Service Committee we will plan fundraisers, deal with money, and talk to the Y-Club about what we need to do to get to where we want to be. We already have about 4 members but if you want to join talk to Mrs. Gilbert or Campbell Stahl.
For this year we are allowing 7th-8th graders to join our Y Chapter. You don’t have to fill out anything but please speak with Mrs. Gilbert to let her know you would like to join.
Site Based Decision Making Council: Part Two
By Audrey Gilbert
The SBDM council, or the Site Based Decision-Making council (SBDM), is one of the results of the 1990 House Bill 940 or the Kentucky Education Reform Act (KERA). Under this piece of legislation, each school in Kentucky is required to have a school based council in order to make decisions to improve student achievement. Each council is made up of at least three teachers, two parents, and an administrator, with one of these being a minority, in order to have complete outreach.
Statute 160.345 outlines the specifics of the Site Based Decision Making council. The statute describes the details of being a council member, as well as the general purpose of the SBDM council. This particular statute has been revised roughly 16 times since its creation on July 13, 1990.
I recently asked Ashlie Cox, a consultant from the Office of Continuous Improvement and Support in the Department of Education, some questions about SBDM. She said that the most important that the Site Based Decision Making council decides on “is selecting the principal and setting goals and targets for the school that will meet the needs of the students and help them progress in their learning.” She also said that students can even participate as non-voting members.
Our schools SBDM council meets about once a month in our library. Some meeting minutes and agendas are available on our school website. Based on what our teacher members have said the issues that they will most likely be discussing in the future are budgets, cell phone policy, and student achievement. If you are interested in any of these topics and want to know what the SBDM is going to do about it, you can go to the public meeting and find out what decisions are made.

What they will be building...
The RoboArena program is designed to incorporate students who will form multiple teams to work with 16 to 20 small robots (approximately 10" to 12" square). Student teams will be required to make their robots complete a specific function and then compete against other student/ robot teams in a game that borrows from basketball, football and volleyball. Each will build a robot that must be designed to shoot a golf ball sized object into a goal, a defending robot (or robots) to act as a goalie, and a robot that will act as a ball delivery mechanism to the shooting robot. The RoboArena program includes elements of design, fabrication, electronics, programming and 3D printing and the all important element of play to garner the engagement and enthusiasm of young people!

Recess Poll Results
More Recess Makes Happier, Healthier Kids
by Khloe S.
In elementary school, recess is a very common thing amongst the kids and teachers, but in middle school recess isn’t nearly as common. Due to the lack of recess fewer children will be in shape, more children won’t be able to focus, and this change from recess in elementary school to no recess in middle school is too big of a gap. This shows that we should at least start adding in a 15- 30 minute recess for at least one day a week.
In middle school there is typically a required health class, but that sometimes isn’t enough to help keep children in shape. Here recently, our school has added a mandatory health class that really is helping kids with their physical health, but not only does health class only go to a certain extent of health, with recess, kids can stay healthy and they can do what they want to do so. Lots of children also feel that if they can go outside for even 15 minutes of a recess it can help their mental health too. Kids who go outside during recess get to give their brains a break from all they do during the day and in school. Without this break kids are more likely to develop migraines and headaches.
Also in middle school without recess, many kids begin to get distracted and it can become frustrating for many reasons. Kids will get so frustrated because they can’t get up when they want, and they don’t get the time to go outside and take a break. These things will not only make kids hate school more because they can’t take a break, but they could take a break if they had recess in middle school. If we even had recess once a week, people could have a break to look forward to and they wouldn’t have to go day after day without a break which could make them distracted in class.
One last thing is that there is too big of a gap from having recess in elementary school to having absolutely no recess in middle school. This change is a major change for some children because they go from daily recess to no recess no matter what. If we had recess at least once a week, we could break this gap down and children wouldn’t have to deal with that change too. Also, with this gap, many children already have to deal with the switching classes, and the new teachers, and the difficult work, and if we just add no recess to this list, new middle schoolers will have all of these things to deal with and sometimes it’s easier to just give middle schoolers recess so they have one less thing to add to the list.
In conclusion, if we let middle schoolers have recess, we can help keep them in shape, we can keep kids from getting distracted, and we can close the gap in recess change from elementary school to middle school. Because of these things, we should be able to have recess in middle school.
Recess is a waste of time for middle Schoolers
by Audrey G.
As a middle schooler who is forced to take time out of my day for recess once a week, I find that it is a waste of time. Personally, I have grown out of it. I find that I sit and talk with my friend more than actually play or get energy out. Adding daily recess would only cost us valuable learning time. Recess has become obsolete for middle schoolers and it needs to be eliminated.
During the day middle school kids go through many different classes. We have the opportunity to socialize during class switches and lunch. As we’re preparing to go to high school we need to limit the time we get to fool around and start focusing on academics. We cut off class time in order to make time for recess. On the days that we have two extra core classes we are supposed to have an hour in each class, but some teachers decided to cut the classes back to 45 minutes a piece in order to make time for recess. This extra class time should be used for instruction and practice, not for playing around.
Recess also gives kids a sense that school is a place to play. One many occasions my teachers have complained about how long to takes to get the class back in focus after recess. Not only do we use up class time with recess but when we are having to regroup we are losing even more class time. Middle schoolers have enough distractions without recess, they definitely don’t need anymore.
Students also tend to get in more trouble with each other during free time. I have seen many fights break out at recess. Middle schoolers are very prone to drama and they don’t need to have extra time to feed in to it, much less at school. If students get into a fight at recess they will bring it into the classroom which will only distract from learning. The more trouble kids get into at recess, the more they will have to deal with on top of their daily lives.
Recess is nothing but a waste of time for everyone involved and giving middle schoolers more recess would only add to the drawbacks. Recess in middle school is completely unnecessary and will certainly cause more problems than it's worth. Middle school teachers keep telling us that they won’t coddle us, but giving us recess would definitely be a step in that direction.
This Week's Poll
One Student's Opinion: Cell Phones in School are a Good Thing!
Even though phones maybe a distraction, they can be very useful. Students should have phones in class because they can be used with the tools, parent contact and free periods.
To begin students should have phones in class because the tools can be used for good first with the tools on phones now like calculators. You can get a lot more done in class with math problem. Secondly, the tools, like dictionaries, can help with reading words, etc., in class. Thirdly the tools that have language skills and etcetera can help with the speaking and other things in class. To conclude that is why tools can be helpful in class and less of a distraction that's why students should be allowed to have phones.
Another reason students should be allowed to have cellphones in class because they can be used for parent contact. First it can be hard to contact parents sometimes and parents don't always up pick up to the school but they will to their kid. Secondly, if the school doesn't have a parent's number they can get it quicker through the student . Third, parent contact should be thing that student should do and telling their own parents it will make them more responsible as a child and adult. Read on find out more reasons why student should be able to have cellphones in school.
Finally student should be allowed to have cellphones in school because they can be used in free periods. First, in free periods students try to get work done and there are no devices for them to use. Secondly free periods are valuable time that can be used for studying work or makeup . Thirdly and finally, free periods can be less distracting with talking etc., and instead they'd be on their phones. In conclusion students should have cellphones in school because of their ability to be used in a free periods.
In conclusion students should have phones in school because they can be used with tools parent contacting free periods that is why I think that we should have cellphones in school.
Cell phones for kids? No way!
Cell phones: The Life of Our Teens Today
“Ella are you listening?” Of course not, she is on her phone. These days, kids and teen are glued to their phones. Allowing them at school is just making them more addicted and more distracted. I believe cell phones should be banned from school for many reasons.
First of all, phones are a major distraction. I constantly see kids my age with their head down staring at their phone while walking. Not to mention the fact that students try to sneak their phones into class. In addition, teens love to play games. If they are in the middle of something, they will not take any interruptions and will do all they can to make sure it’s finished. Allowing phones at school is just giving more time to letting students use their phones and perhaps get addicted.
Second of all, phones can be used for cheating. Kids are smart, especially when it comes to technology. They could easily figure out elements of the periodic table without teachers knowing. Although, it doesn’t take much effort to type a math equation into a calculator. If teens are allowed access to phones during school and class, who knows if any of their test scores really show what they know. If phones are welcome into classrooms, who knows what students will do just to get a good grade on a test.
As a final thought, letting students have phones at school will give the message we don’t care about whether other students are getting bullied. Some teens decide to judge someone or be mean to others based on looks, and maybe even intelligence. A lot of that can be done on social media. Bullying can cause lots of harm to someone’s life and if teens begin and continue to use their phones at school, the amount of kids being bullied will definitely increase.
As you can see, there are many reasons cell phones need and should be banned from school. Can’t you see how much of a problem they can be? Without cell phones at school, students will be more successful during school and in their future.

A Poem by Ella D.
The Woman I Never Knew
I never knew this day would come that I had to say goodbye
To the woman I never knew
The woman that called me by “child,” instead of my given name
The rose flourished the dim room
As the last goodbyes were made to the woman I never knew
Tears nourished the mournful carpet as it had many times before
The gray cape clasped to the marshmallows that dangled from the heavens
It mourned barely sustaining the weeping willows
I felt hurt for the humans that cherished her presence
For I had no feeling for the absence of the woman I never knew
TV Series Review: A Series of Unfortunate Events Season 1
by Anthony P.
I would give this show a solid 8 out of 10. The reason I am giving it a high rating is that the show’s story is really interesting to follow and to see how the characters develop and change, but the most thrilling to see is how the story progresses.
The story, based on a series of books by Lemony Snicket, follows three main characters named Klaus Baudelaire, Violet Baudelaire, and Sunny Baudelaire. Their parents die in a house fire and that causes the Baudelaires to become orphans and become known as the Baudelaire orphans. The Baudelaire orphans get adopted by a man named Count Olaf who is actually evil and wants the money they will receive called “The Baudelaire Fortune”.
Basically, in the first season we don't get too much insight on why or what is going on, but we get the basics of the story. We learn about the eye tattoo they have and why some things are going on, but we still as an audience will question everything. The show is very mysterious and confusing but that is what makes A Series Of Unfortunate Events.
Eli's Story: Part 2
How To Eat
Eating is very important, obviously! Why would we have three different parts of our day set aside just to eat? Because of that, people being people, they sometimes look... well… nasty while they eat, to say the least. This article will show you the way to greatness: the three great manners of eating with the right utensils, eating the right foods, and eating with manners.
To begin, don't ever and I mean ever eat cereal with a fork! That’s just one a example of what not to do with utensils. It is important to use your utensils right for several reasons. First, you don't get the full taste. Second, you don't want to look silly. Third, it is important to remember: a spoon is not catapult and a fork is not a shiv.
Second, eating right is the most important of all others because you don’t want to be unhealthy. Eating can help fights diseases. If you eat unhealthy food and try running for exercise then eat more unhealthy foods, all the running would be for no reason. Eating certain foods like chicken soup or hot tea, when you have the flu or cold it clears up sinuses.
Finally, manners are the most important things to have especially when eating. First put your napkin on your lap. Second, eat slowly don't stab the plate trying to get a piece of chicken.
To conclude, use your utensils right, eat healthy, and have manners and it will pay off. Watch as you get more friends because you followed my rules.

The Gamer's Corner
Minecraft
by Jack G.
Minecraft is an open world adventure game where you try to get to ¨The End¨ and try to defeat the Ender Dragon. On your way you need to craft tools and get materials. You will also encounter Mobs, both good and bad. One thing you might find yourself going to ¨The Nether¨. The game also has much much more in store, for the game also has servers that you can play mini games online. The game also has much more in store for those who look hard enough.
I have loved Minecraft for many years now and have to say the more it updates, the more I like it. I say this because every update brings new blocks, new items, new biomes, and etc. If you are looking for a adventure you should try it. Even if you get board with one adventure, you can just start a completely new one on a different world.
On from 1-10, I give it a 10. Not only because of the game play but because of the possibilities available with the creative. No matter what genre of games you like, Minecraft is always will be fun.
