# Scientific Questionaire

## PARTS OF THE EXPERIMENT

Independent Variable: Age of the subject (18 and under or above 18)

Dependent Variable: Number of hours spent on the internet per day (excluding for school and work purposes)

Control Group: none

Experimental Group(s): People age 18 and under, and people over 18.

Constants: All subjects were asked the same set of questions, all subjects had internet access, all subjects were asked to disregard time spent on internet that was for work/school

## Analysis

There is no significant difference between the average daily hours spent on the internet by people 18 or under and by people over the age of 18. The evidence is found in the results of the survey, where 13 people in both age categories were asked how many hours they spent on the internet, excluding for work or school. The mean for people 18 and under was 1.75 hours, while the mean for people over 18 was 2.04 hours. However, the error bars (calculated with 2SEM) overlap, meaning there is not a significant difference between the two groups. The p-value from our T.Test was 0.25, which is 5 times the significant value, (0.05), only further proving that our variable did not affect our hypothesis. The reasoning behind the evidence is that both age groups are busy with work and school, and so have a roughly equal amount of free time. 80% of 18-44-year-olds wake up and immediately check their smart phones, only further proving that although there is a common belief that teenagers are attached to their cell phones, most peoples tend to pick up their phone in any free time the have (Stadd).

## Conclusion

The hypothesis claimed that people 18 and under would spend more average hours per day on the internet that people over the age of 18. Testing the hypothesis showed that it was not supported, since there was no significant difference between the average number of hours spent on the internet and people above 18. This shows that the internet offers about the same amount of distraction to both of these age groups, and that both groups spend close to the same average time on the internet because of similar amounts of free time due to time taken up by work or school.

## Sources of Error/Inaccuracies

A possible source of error during this questionnaire can be attributed to mostly human error. As the subjects were being asked a question, they didn't have exact the most precise or accurate data. Instead, they took a guess based on their habits. If the most accurate data had been collected, there might have been a change in the results of the questionnaire. Also not taken into consideration was the limitations put on teenagers by their parents. Some parents only allow their kids to use their phones or laptops for a restricted amount of time each day, so that could have affected the accuracy of the data as well.
