Hacking the Writing Workshop:
Redesign with MAKING in Mind
by Angela Stockman
Today's Writers...
- "Today's writers can say anything they want to anyone they want anytime they want and they can share their work on a scale that we've never experienced before. But in a world where anyone can be immediately published, they must produce work that stands out, is influential, and is worth sharing. They must be multi-medium designers who integrate diverse forms in order to communicate, engage, and serve."
Survey Your Students...
- "Survey your students about their interests in writing and other creative expression. Help them define their strengths and uncover their needs. As much as possible, start to immerse yourself in their worlds: Spend time in their communities and get acquainted with the issues that matter most to them. Use what you discover to transform your curriculum and your practices, and solicit their feedback on the changes along the way."
Making Motivates...
- "Making motivates writers, especially when their writing is built around their making. Teachers may choose the form in much the same way we always have in a writer's workshop, but inviting writers to choose their own topics, and more important, to center their drafts around the things they're making, is pretty powerful stuff."
Thought Question:
How can we change writing instruction, incorporating making, and encouraging writers to create in multiple modalities?
