Remote Conferencing for Quarantined Students
NEISD is committed to offering multiple ways for your students to stay engaged while in quarantine. One way is through remote conferencing which will start on September 7th. Remote conferencing allows your child to interact with live tutors for four hours a day (9 am to 1 pm). The live tutors are here to support your children as they work on their classroom assignments from their home campus teachers. The live tutors are only for the core content areas: English, math, social studies, and science. Tutors are available to answer questions and assist with your child's classwork. It is important for your child to advocate for their learning needs in this environment since the number of students in quarantine continues to fluctuate; sometimes the numbers are low, in which the tutor can meet all needs of all individual students while other times we may see a spike and tutors will have to work with larger groups. In the spirit of transparency, we have looked at hiring more tutors, which would alleviate this problem, but the fact of the matter is there just aren't enough people available during the daytime to assist in this work. (If you are available to help, please see the application on the NEISD website.)
Currently, the school nurse or your family doctor will have to indicate that your child needs to be quarantined in order to receive this service. We are looking to expand the program to other students in the near future who may need to stay home for various reasons, but at this juncture, we only have the capacity to serve students quarantined by the school nurse or a family doctor.
If your child chooses to participate in remote conferencing, they will be counted present for the day if they attend all four hours. We are still getting guidance from the State on attendance. Your child may be marked absent temporarily until we work out the process with the State. You do not need to contact the school. We will fix the attendance issue programmatically. Please be patient as this may take a few weeks.
Once the school nurse marks your child as in quarantine, Skyward will send you your child's schedule and directions on how to access the remote conferencing. (A sample schedule is shown in the image below.)Please know that your child has other options. If your child can work independently, they may choose to work on their assignments and turn them in to their teachers via Google Classroom. Though they will be counted absent, these absences are excused. Additionally, we are creating an evening tutoring plan to assist students in some of the more typically challenging courses like Algebra, Geometry, Chemistry, Physics, and other upper level math and science courses. These tutors will be available from 6 pm to 8 pm most weeknights. We will share more information about evening tutors once we have hired for all positions and created the schedule.
Thank you for all your help as we try everything possible to support your child's needs (both academic and emotional) in an ever changing moment in time.
