Cross Country Teams Start New Tradition to Promote Sportsmanship
For this year's Battle of the Ax pre-game activities, the Sherman High School and Denison High School Cross Country teams took a page from several historic college football rivalries and started a new BOTA tradition with the running of the game ball.
To begin the new tradition, members of the Denison Cross Country team took turns running the game ball for ten miles starting at Munson Stadium. With a police escort, the team proudly ran down Austin St. in Denison, via Highway 91 through Sherman, and arrived at Bearcat Stadium right before kick-off. The SHS Cross Country team greeted the runners as they ran on to the field to present the game ball to the referees.
Next year, the Sherman Cross Country team will run the game ball from Bearcat Stadium to Munson Stadium and present it to Denison referees before kick-off. Each team will alternate every year with the hope that the new tradition will promote athleticism and sportsmanship.
Thanks to SHS Head Cross Country Coach Anthony Shearer, the Bearcat Cross country team, the Denison Head Cross Country Coach Scotty Voight, and the Denison Cross Country team for taking the time to make this a great BOTA experience for all.
