Congratulations are in order for our very own Israel Gibson! HHS senior, Israel, has been named as one of the recipients of the 2022-2023 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship*!
Israel is a member of the National Honor Society, a peer mentoring group, and also a part of the golf team and chess club at his school. Joan Martin Alumni Make an Impact on Current JM Brickie Leaders!
On Tuesday's Brickie Leaders meeting at Joan Martin Elementary School, four Brickie Leaders "alumni" were recognized by Dr. Buffington and the Brickie Leaders sponsors. Here's what the sponsors had to say: "These girls were past Brickie Leaders. We just wanted to share that they have been coming to Joan Martin to attend our Brickie Leaders meetings. They have made such a huge impact on our 5th graders. At times they have met with students that are having some struggles with friendships. They listen and provide advice on how to help out and also provide some insight as to what our 5th graders can expect at HMS next year. We are so proud of these young ladies and wanted to let you know what an amazing job they are doing!"
Congratulations and THANK YOU to Brynn, Faith, Taryn, and Ava! Way to #BeExcellentOnPurpose!
Veterans Elementary Drama Club Delivers Amazing Performances of "Dickens of a Christmas" Musical!
Last weekend, the Drama Club at Veterans Elementary presented their first stage production since the school's inception in 2020! They did a phenomenal job bringing to life a retelling of the classic holiday story, "A Christmas Carol." We are so proud of Mrs. Amsler and all the students and staff involved in making this musical a success! Bravo!

Brickies Explore and Celebrate Computer Science During Annual Hour of Code!
The Hour of Code is organized by Code.org and driven by the Hour of Code Review Committee as well as an unprecedented coalition of partners that have come together to support the Hour of Code — including Microsoft, Apple, Amazon, Boys and Girls Clubs of America and the College Board. The Hour of Code started as a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify "code", to show that anybody can learn the basics, and to broaden participation in the field of computer science. It has since become a worldwide effort to celebrate computer science, starting with 1-hour coding activities but expanding to all sorts of community efforts.
Many of our Brickies from the ELC all the way up to the high school participated throughout the week, taking part in all sorts of fun activities in the computer science realm! Students learned that computer science is fun and creative, that it is accessible at all ages, for all students, regardless of background.
Joan Martin Brickie Leaders Raise Money for Giving Tree!
Joan Martin Elementary School Brickie Leaders held a fundraiser at JM to help raise money for Hobart Tri Kappa City-Wide Giving Tree. This year, they raised $140. They also made Christmas cards for the families to go along with their presents. Way to go, kids! We are very proud of you! #BeExcellentOnPurpose

Coping Strategies for December
December is a joyful and hectic time of the year. Begin December with a focus on mental health and taking a few moments each day to practice and plan for a sense of calm. As a family, practice a few coping strategies to know what might be options for family members. Then notice when individuals have strong feelings. When this happens, don’t place judgement. Practice the coping strategy to allow individuals to calm down. This allows everyone to process information and make better decisions. This month, several coping strategies will be offered. The strategies work for all ages.
