IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT
Dr. Somerall is meeting with 4th and 5th graders to review the District 5 Cell Phone Policy for Elementary Students and the Acceptable Use Agreement for All Students concerning student use of the Chromebook and the district email account.
Together, we want to grow responsible and respectful digital citizens, and we strongly encourage your family to review these policies together and have discussions about your family's expectations for how your child uses the Chromebook, email, and cell phone appropriately, and within the guidelines of D5 Student Code of Conduct.
It may be a good idea for you and your child to login to the email account together during this discussion. If you need help accessing your child's account to have greater oversight of this tool in your home, please contact your child's teacher or Dr. Somerall.
D5 CELL PHONE POLICY for Elementary Students
Students may possess wireless communication devices in school, on school property, during after school activities (e.g. extra-curricular activities) and at school-related functions. However, students may not use wireless devices while on school property during school hours.
Please click the link below to access the entire Acceptable Use Agreement for All Students.
Acceptable Use Agreement for All Students
D5 teachers organize any and all Google Meets. Students should not be sending invitations for Google Meets or using their school account for personal emails or messages. The Acceptable Use Agreement details how these devices and software are to be used for educational and instructional purposes only.

From The School Counselor:
Hello Families!
Do you know about our Essential Eight program? Here at DFES, each classroom receives one book every month related to a topic that promotes the personal growth and development of our students. Some topics we have explored in the past include responsibility, respect, kindness, growth mindset and cooperation. Teachers and staff also receive a slide presentation that they can use with their students to review and practice these skills.
This year, we will be basing our Essential Eight topics on the book Thrivers by Michele Borba. Thrivers are students who can flourish in our fast paced, digitally driven, often uncertain world. These students demonstrate character traits that allow them to bounce back from their mistakes, and become happier and more successful in life. These teachable skills are self confidence, empathy, self-control, integrity, curiosity, perseverance and optimism. You can learn more about exploring these qualities with your student at our Second Cup of Coffee events with Principal Scott. In the meantime, here are some questions to spark discussions with your child about self confidence:
What are you proud of yourself for today?
What did you learn about yourself today?
What difficult decision did you make today? What made it a challenging choice?
What strengths did you use today?
What positive choices did you make today?
How did you give back to the world today? How did that make others feel?
How did you show your best self today?
How could you make tomorrow even better?
I hope you will make some time to talk with your child about their school day. You may both learn from the conversation. Please call or email me if you have any questions or concerns about your student’s experiences here at DFES. I’ll be happy to help!
