6th Grade Mathematics and Physical Education

Dear Fifth Grade Families and Families new to CMS,


Welcome to Coronado Middle School for the 2020-2021 school year! CMS is dedicated to supporting the learning and growth of every student on our campus, and we look forward to partnering with you to provide a rigorous, engaging, and top-notch middle school experience.


Middle school is an important and critical time of transition when students prepare for the challenges of high school and learn to navigate their social and emotional lives. What happens during these few short years will make a lasting impression on their development and growth.

Mathematics

The Coronado Middle School Mathematics Department would like to welcome the incoming 5th graders to middle school for the 2020-2021 school year. In order to meet the rigorous California Mathematics Standards, we will be offering two sixth grade math courses; Math 6 and Math 6 Honors.


The majority of incoming 6th graders will be placed in the Math 6 course. Taking this course will ensure students establish a solid foundation for success in higher level mathematics classes. Math 6 focuses on four critical areas: (1) connecting ratio and rate to whole number multiplication and division, and using concepts of ratio and rate to solve problems; (2) completing understanding of division of fractions and extending the notion of number to the system of rational numbers, which includes negative numbers; (3) writing, interpreting, and using expressions and equations; and (4) developing understanding of statistical thinking. These standards have been established to optimize student opportunities to work at the highest level where the student can be successful independently.


California Standards for Mathematics highly discourages acceleration before grade 9. Multiple opportunities to accelerate will occur in high school. The reason for this is that the standards for middle school incorporate the critical mathematical foundation essential for all students. Accelerating and/or “skipping” to get to advanced courses as quickly as possible is not appropriate. Students taking the grade level sequence: Math 6, Math 7, and Math 8 will receive rigorous instruction while still being able to take AP Calculus in High School.


Math 6 Honors, will be offered for students who have demonstrated a very high level of procedural fluency and conceptual understanding. Students will move through the curriculum at an accelerated rate, dive deeper into the standards, and will be expected to explain and justify their mathematical reasoning at a higher level. In order to be successful in this course, students must have strong reading and writing skills, excellent organization, self-motivation, maturity, possess strong critical thinking skills, and be detail oriented.


CUSD requires and values use of multiple objective measures as the basis for advancing students to the next recommended course in a math sequence for all secondary grades. Additionally, there are multiple checkpoints to ensure accurate student placement, especially at the beginning and end of a school year. Please be aware that students’ schedules may change during the first month of school after follow-up student placement assessments.


Required criteria for being placed in Math 6 Honors for the 20-21 school year:

  • 5th Grade MAP Winter Mathematics RIT Score of 237 or above
  • 5th Grade MAP Winter Reading RIT Score of 220 or above
  • Bridges unit assessments average of 90% or above
  • Advanced competency demonstrated in previous math course

**CMS is not offering a math placement test. Students will be placed in Math 6 Honors based on the required placement criteria and will be notified in early August.


Note: Students who demonstrate outstanding proficiency in Math 6 may be eligible to accelerate in 7th grade.

Exploring 6th Grade Physical Education Online / Hybrid Class for 2020-2021

NOTE:This letter is written based on the CMS school site being open. Should the school year begin with, or move to, a distance learning model, all students will be completing the Hybrid PE curriculum and “in class” meetings will be held virtually.


Dear 5th Grade Families, .


In a continued effort to provide our students with personalized educational opportunities, CMS is exploring the possibility of offering a 6th grade online/in-class “Hybrid” Physical Education class for the 2020-2021 school year. CMS currently offers this class to 7th and 8th graders. The course curriculum meets the California State Content Standards, mirroring our current 6th-Grade PE class and may be offered for students who desire an alternative, flexible physical education experience. The method of delivery, however, will be primarily online with several scheduled class meetings on the CMS campus throughout the year. The class size is limited, so if there are more students interested than space available, your child may not be registered in the class. Additionally, students who are self-starters, work well independently, have strong technology skills, and have maintained an A or B average during his/her 5th-grade year will be most equipped for success in this course.


  • Class time: Monday through Friday, Period 7 - 2:15 pm- 3:05 pm. (Wednesday, Minimum Day at 1:00-1:41 pm). With the exception of daily meetings at the start of the year, progressing to less frequent meetings, students will be dismissed from school and leave campus at the end of period 6 - M, T, TH, F at 2:11 p.m and Wednesdays at 12:56 pm. On in class meeting days, the students will remain on campus and be dismissed at the end of period 7 at 3:05 p.m./ Wed. 1:41 pm. The on campus meeting days will be determined and provided to parents and students at the beginning of the school year. We will be targeting consistent days to meet throughout the year. Note: There will be several meeting days during the first six weeks of school to provide direct instruction on course navigation.

  • Transportation: CMS does not provide bus service at the end of the 6th period. Parents are to provide transportation or allow your student to walk or bike. Students are expected to leave campus at the end of their 6th period class.

  • Location: The expectation is for the students to complete their online course work at home. Required in class meetings will be held on CMS PE facilities or classrooms.

  • Commitment: Students will end their day and leave campus after period 6 at 2:11 pm rather than 3:05 pm. (Wednesday, 12:56 pm rather than 1:41 pm.) On scheduled on-campus meeting days, students will remain at CMS until the end of the school day.

  • Who should apply: Students who are motivated, self-starters, and want to have flexibility in their daily schedule for outside athletics or activities. Students who seek an alternative approach to the on-campus Physical Education class.

  • Course content is provided via CUSD’s learning management system, PowerSchool. Students will complete approximately 15 (units) during the school year. Assignments range from creating personal and small group activity/instructional videos, personal exercise logs, online activity, and health assessments. All work is submitted online except the in-class, face to face meeting activities (schedule TBD).
