Lincoln Assassinated!
President Lincoln was re-elected in 1864 and was assassinated at Ford Theater in Washington, D. C., April 14,1865, by John Wilkes Booth. His Reconstruction plan had been underway since well before Lee's surrender at Appamattox Courthouse on April 9, 1865.
Reconstruction plans took several different forms as the United States government tried to go about rebuilding the shattered South despite resistance by the former Confederate states.
