DUE TO INCLEMENT WEATHER, WE WILL NOT HAVE CHECK-IN THIS EVENING. SCHOOL WILL BE CLOSED MONDAY, 1/14/19. CHECK-IN WILL TAKE PLACE MONDAY EVENING (MS, 7 P.M.; HS, 8 P.M.). DINNER WILL NOT BE SERVED.
Faculty Update Letter
School Uniform Reset
Our UNIFORM RESET is in full swing!
The uniform reset has been introduced to help all scholars get back on track with wearing proper uniform attire, but we need your support. Please ensure that your scholar has all uniform shirts, pants, & shoes packed for the week.
For a limited time, uniform shirts will be available on campus for purchase at the discounted price of $10 each. Quantities are limited, so make plans to purchase your shirt early. By January 7th, all scholars are expected and required to be in full uniform.
Also, all scholars will receive a SEED fleece for FREE!
Please encourage your scholar to come to Mrs. Holman-Jones or Mrs. Williams during their lunch periods to get sized for their fleece jacket.
Early Check-out - Thursday, 1/17 & Other School Closures
Don't forget that check-out this week is Thursday, January 17th from 3:30-6:00 p.m. School is closed for all scholars on Friday, January 18th.
In observance of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday, school is closed on Monday, January 21st. There will be NO SUNDAY CHECK-IN on Sunday, January 20th.
Check-in will be Tuesday, January 22nd from 6:00-7:30 a.m.
Please plan accordingly.
Family Volunteers Needed - SEE NEW ADDITION IN BOLD
The available times are Sundays, Mondays, & Fridays for any two hour window, 6-8 p.m. (excluding Nov. 23rd, 25th, 26th , 30th and Dec 2nd , 3rd, 7th , 17th 24th–31st)
Volunteers are also need for:
- Dinner duty support (Mon-Thurs 5:00-7:00 p.m.)
- School store support (Mon-Thurs 5:00-8:00p.m.)
- Hallway supervision (Mon-Thurs 4:00-9:00p.m.)
- Check-in (7-9 p.m.)
- Check-out (3:30-5:30 p.m.)
- Holiday decorating between Nov 25-Dec 9th
- Cosmetology, hair, & skin care [for 7th & 8th grade girls] (Mondays 4:45-5:30 p.m.)

FAMILY & COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT ANNOUNCEMENTS
Open House - 1/12/2019
Next Saturday, January 12, 2019, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., SEED DC will host its annual open house for rising 9th graders for the 2019-2020 school year.
We invite our current 8th grade families to come learn more about what they can expect from our high school program.
Also, if you know of an 8th grader & family who would be interested in our unique college preparatory program, invite them to attend.
We look forward to seeing you there!
Free Shape Ups
We are piloting a program to offer free shape ups to boys and girls in The SEED PCS community. The first 5 to sign up will receive a fresh new shape up from Mr. Barrington, Marshall Hall Overnight Assistant. We are excited to expand this program and hope to partner with a local barbershop in the future.

Parent Action Team Lunch & Learn, 1/15/19 - 12-1 p.m.
Have lunch with The FACE Team and learn about Empowering Questions and Improving Communication with your Teen. We will have exciting updates about events, programs, and opportunities in our community.
We will have a raffle for a 30 minute express massage, gift card giveaways, SEED Swag giveaways, and transportation support is available if requested. Please email email@example.com if you are in need of transportation or child care for the event.
Please remember to use the attendance email, firstname.lastname@example.org to inform the school about absences and lateness. Starting Monday, January 15th families will receive a daily automated email and text when their scholar is marked absent for the day.

M.E.T.E.O.R. Experiential Research Project - Rising Juniors Only
METEOR provides talented students high school students the opportunity to participate in an experiential research project at Children’s National Medical Center and its Children’s Research Institute. This eight week summer experience is designed to encourage students to take the required steps toward careers in STEM and biomedical research fields.

Experiment in International Living [EIL] (9th-11th Grade Scholars Only)
Important Summer 2019 Deadlines:
January 16 – Admissions & scholarship applications due for applicants applying to The Experiment Leadership Institute.
February 13 – Admissions & scholarship applications due for applicants seeking need-based scholarships from The Experiment. Students must submit their enrollment deposit within two weeks of scholarship award notification.
The Cathedral Scholars Program (9th Grade Scholars Only)
APPLICATION DEADLINE IS FEBRUARY 6, 2019
The Cathedral Scholars Program is currently kicking off its recruitment season for new Scholars. The Cathedral Scholars Program is a four-year college preparatory program that provides academic enrichment, professional and career exploration, leadership development, and community engagement experience for selected high school students in DC Public and Charter High Schools. CSP highlights include intensive academic courses (English, Math, and SAT prep classes) with afternoon placements in paid internships (in partnership with the MBSYEP); college tours; opportunities for full or partial college scholarships; and opportunities for cultural experiences and community service.
Each year, 15 ninth graders from at least five different D.C. public and charter schools are inducted into the Cathedral Scholars Program through a competitive application process. The Scholars are primarily students of color with minimum of a 3.0 GPA, low to moderate family income and first generation college students. The cohorts of 15 students are recruited from 1/3 of D.C. public and charter schools on a three-year rotating basis. Our inclusive approach to recruitment ensures diversity amongst each scholar cohort. The goal of recruitment is to have students representing every D.C. public and charter high school every three years.
The Bezos Scholars Program
APPLICATION DEADLINE: February 8, 2019
The Bezos Scholars Program is a year-long leadership development program that amplifies youth voice and action. Scholars are teams made up of a student and their educator, who have demonstrated accomplishment, embraced new challenges, and aspire to lead change in their community. Successful applicants are current high school juniors that demonstrate academic rigor, maturity, curiosity, and leadership.
- Be a junior during the 2018-19 academic year
- Be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or have received DACA status
- Demonstrate leadership in their school and community
- Have taken and received scores for at least one of the following tests: PSAT, SAT, ACT, or ACT Aspire
- Be enrolled in, or have taken, one or more Advanced Placement (AP) classes, International Baccalaureate (IB) classes, or college-level courses
- Be available to participate fully and attend all trip dates for the Aspen Ideas Festival trip in Aspen, Colorado on June 22-28, 2019
- August 2019 – June 2020: Commit to attending monthly webinars, check-in calls, and develop and launch a community change project (Local Ideas Festival) as well as complete three reports on the progress of project development
Space Camp 2019
The Fish & Richardson U.S. Space Camp Scholarship includes, for each student (must be between the ages of 12 and 14 on the first day of camp, July 21, 2019):
- Full tuition for a six-day program at the U.S. Space Camp; July 21st - 26th
- Round trip air fare for travel from Washington, D.C. to Huntsville, Alabama
- Transportation to/from the airport in Huntsville, Alabama to the U.S. Space Camp
- $250 for expenses
- U.S. Space Camp Space Suit
Candidates will be selected based on the following criteria:
- Academic Performance in Science and Mathematics (20 Points)
- Classroom Behavior (20 Points)
- Classroom Attendance (5 Points)
- Questionnaire (5 Points)
- Potential and Interest in Science (5 Points)
- Interview (10 Points)
Applications will be available in the Lobby, 101C, and with Mrs. Claytor-Jones and Mr. Murphy. All application packets are due by Friday, February 1st. Incomplete applications or applications submitted after the due date will not be considered. Based on the evaluation forms, at least 5 top candidates will be interviewed in-person by the firm. Fish & Richardson will select 3 students, and 1-2 alternates.

Yale Young Global Scholars Program (10th & 11th Grade Scholars Only)
The Yale Young Global Scholars Program (YYGS) is a summer academic enrichment and leadership program that brings together students from around the world for two-week sessions on Yale’s campus in New Haven.
Additionally, YYGS-Beijing: Asia in the 21st Century will be administered by Yale Center Beijing and takes place in Beijing, China. Current high school sophomores and juniors are eligible to apply online at https://globalscholars.yale.edu/admissions.
