NEW: This Week's Message from Mr. Smith
Northwest High School Families,
I hope all is well in Jag Nation and everyone has been having a wonderful weekend.
I want to start with reiterating my message sent yesterday afternoon regarding Friday night's events. I wish to be very clear that together we strongly condemn this unacceptable behavior that occured at the football game. This disrespectful and dangerous behavior is not what we model and communicate to our students and must not be tolerated. Additionally, the Athletics programs in MCPS are designed to support and enhance the academic experience for our students and help build school and community spirit. Each week, the vast majority of our students participate in and attend hundreds of athletic contests, demonstrating the respect and sportsmanship we expect as outlined in the MCPS R.A.I.S.E. core values. We will reinforce these values with our students at school and we ask you to discuss these expectations with your children before they attend any school event. You can find the complete joint letter from Mr. Dimmick, principal of Gaithersburg High School and I linked here.
As we move into this full five-day week, be reminded that this Wednesday, September 21 is a Jag Paws Day. Additionally, please plan ahead for grades 9-11 student pictures which will take place through Math classes this Wednesday, September 21 - Friday, September 23.
As a reminder, beginning tomorrow, Monday, September 19, all cars driven by students must display a valid 2022-2023 parking permit and be parked in their assigned space. Cars that are parked in the incorrect space, or do not have a valid parking permit, may be ticketed and towed at the owner’s expense. If you would like to a pick up or turn in a student parking permit application, please go to the Business Office (room 322) before school, during lunch, or after school until 2:45 p.m.

NEW: MCPS Message about State's Attorney's Office Assemblies in High Schools
Dear MCPS High School Families,
We want to bring to your attention the concern we all share around the impact of guns on our communities, youth and schools and they present an increasing and significant danger nationwide. As a result, Montgomery County Public Schools in collaboration with Montgomery County State’s Attorney's Office and the Montgomery County Police Department are partnering to educate our high school students about how to keep schools and students safe. This important partnership importantly rests on awareness, knowledge, and education as key ingredients in doing so.
Here are the facts:
National data from the Gun Violence Archive reports that the number of teenagers killed or injured by guns has nearly doubled since 2014 and the number of teenagers involved in unintentional shootings has risen by 44 percent. There are alarming numbers in Montgomery County, too; 790 illegal guns have been seized this year as of Aug. 14, up nearly 75 percent since 2020, when there were 452 guns seized. In Maryland, it is illegal for anyone to possess a firearm until 21 years of age. In fact, anyone 16 or older found in possession of a gun will be charged as an adult.
What students will learn:
Through scheduled high school assemblies throughout the fall of 2022, students will be provided with information on the law and consequences if broken, strategies for youth to solve problems without weapons or violence, and the importance of vigilance and a “see something, say something” approach. The assemblies will also offer information on how to recognize signs that someone may choose violence to harm themselves or others, the anonymous Maryland Tip Line and the importance of a violence-free community.
What you need to know:
These assemblies will begin in the coming days and weeks. Schools will share specific information about when they are scheduled at your child’s high school. We appreciate your continued partnership with MCPS and as parents, guardians and caregivers, we ask that you echo these messages at home. Students must seek a trusted adult for support rather than choosing violence. Families can choose to opt-out their child from these lessons by simply contacting their school administrator.
As a reminder: there is a longstanding policy and discipline established concerning weapons brought to school. Essentially weapons of any kind may not be brought to any MCPS school. Any student found in possession of a gun or other weapon may also be subject to serious disciplinary actions in alignment with the MCPS Student Code of Conduct and potentially in violation of local, state and federal law.
We thank the State’s Attorney’s Office for its commitment and partnership; together, we can work for a safer, vibrant, thriving community.
Dr. Monifa B. McKnight
MCPS Superintendent of Schools

NEW: Things you need to know from MCPS for Thursday, September 15
Here are five things to know for Thursday, Sept. 15: information about COVID-19, a revised mobile device regulation and good news about two MCPS employees.
Revised Personal Mobile Device Policy in Place for MCPS Students
The Montgomery County Board of Education has approved a revised regulation (COG-RA) concerning student possession and use of personal mobile devices. This update to the regulation aligns guidelines with current best practices and was developed collaboratively by a workgroup composed of staff, students and community members.
Learn moreScholarship Recognizing Academic Excellence to be Launched in October
Applications will open soon for the newly created Ruth and Norman Rales–Patricia Baier O’Neill Scholarship Recognizing Academic Excellence. These $10,000 scholarships for graduating high school seniors were announced earlier this year by the Norman R. Rales and Ruth Rales Foundation to honor the lives and contributions of Ruth and Norman Rales and Patricia O’Neill, who died Sept. 14, 2021, after having served the longest tenure in the history of the Montgomery County Board of Education.

It remains important that staff and families continue to report positive cases of COVID-19 via this online form. An updated isolation calculator can help you understand when it is OK to return to work or school. Reminder: Any individual who tests positive must isolate for five days, regardless of vaccination status or symptoms. In a special education setting— where masks may not be worn regularly—individuals may be required to isolate for 10 days.Updated COVID-19 Boosters Are Now Available
Recently, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) endorsed updated COVID-19 booster vaccines. The vaccines are bivalent, which means they include protection against both the original SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19, and currently circulating strains of the Omicron variant (BA-4 and BA-5). Anyone older than 12 who is vaccinated against COVID-19 can receive a booster. The Pfizer vaccine is authorized for ages 12 years and older. The Moderna vaccine is authorized for ages 18 years and older. Both booster vaccines must be given after an initial vaccine series, and can be given eight weeks after the last received dose of vaccine or booster.
Where you can find these vaccines:
The Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services is now offering updated bivalent COVID-19 booster vaccines. This is now the only booster available for ages 12+ at county-sponsored clinics, including school-based clinics. Appointments are recommended. Maryland's Vaccine Locator provides information on pharmacies and other locations offering booster appointments and a helpful FAQ on the new boosters.GOOD NEWS: Watch Exciting Stories of Two MCPS Employees
