Summer Break is Almost Here!

The 2016-2017 school year has been a whirlwind, and I know each and every Falcon is ready for the summer! As we wrap up testing this week, we can reflect on how much our students have achieved personally and academically, and we are so proud of our success. Our staff will come back in August refreshed and reloaded with new and innovative plans for learning, and we can't wait to kick off the 2017-2018 school year with our new and returning Falcons!

Please do your part over the summer break to keep reading, keep exploring, and keep learning. The "summer learning slide" is no joke -- we have to keep our brains active and engaged. More information about required summer assignments is highlighted below, but you can do so much here in Charlotte to keep your learning alive and soaring! Have a fantastic summer, and THANK YOU for being a part of our awesome Falcon Family!

Gift Card Drive for Staff Appreciation

Every year, Southminster hosts an end of school breakfast in honor of our fabulous QHMS team -- teachers, administrators, custodial and cafeteria workers, front office staff, counselors and support staff. As a special treat, our Falcon Family community comes together by donating $10 gift cards that will be presented to each and every staff member at the breakfast.

This year, we need to collect 100 individual $10 gift cards by Wednesday June 7 -- they can be from any retailer, Target, Starbucks, McDonald's, Salsarita's, Fabo's, Rusty's just to name a few. Cards can be dropped off in the front office.

Thank you in advance for donating one or more cards. The staff loves this tradition, and is a convenient way for our families to show our love and appreciation for their hard work all year long!

Summer Math & Reading Assignments

All students attending QHMS next year and rising 9th graders at South Meck HS have required summer reading projects, and middle school students also have Math assignments. Click the following link for details on each grade-specific assignment: This link also provides additional online resources for our students to browse for summer learning fun!

*Reading Project Novels: Contact QHMS (980.343.3620) if you need assistance obtaining a copy of your assigned novels. Donations of extra copies are appreciated!

rising 6th: The Cay

rising 7th: Wonder

rising 8th: The Outsiders, plus The Other Wes Moore for Honors ELA students

rising 9th: various choices - see list on the link provided

Remember - it's best to work on these assignments throughout the summer - don't wait till the days before school starts! All assignments are due September 1st.

Courtesy Reminder - Quail Hollow Presbyterian Church

Please help QHMS be a good neighbor to Quail Hollow Presbyterian Church across the street. For years, Quail Hollow Presbyterian Church has generously allowed our families to use their private driveway for after school carpool and overflow event parking. In return, please remember to be respectful of their property and grounds -- please avoid driving on the grass and littering, and kindly refrain from entering their fenced playground area. This equipment is not intended for use by older children. We appreciate your help!

Hand Down your QH Gear & PE Uniforms!

Are you moving on to SMHS? Do you have outgrown QHMS spirit wear or PE uniforms going unworn and taking up space in your closet? Please consider donating to the PE department – we can put that Falcon flair to good use for deserving students. Items can be dropped off in the front office or given to Coach Rose or any member of the PE staff.

Message from the Health Room

Families that have medications in the nurse's office should pick up any medicines by the last day of school. Medicines that are not picked up by the end of the day Friday will be discarded. Contact Nurse White with any questions!

8th Grade End of Year Activities - Paint your Block!

As the end of the school year looms, our 8th graders are finalizing their final tasks as QH Falcons. The months of May and June are extra busy! Now is the time to leave your mark at Quail and "paint a personal brick" along the hallways of Quail! 8th graders must pay $10 to Ms. Leeper to register for block painting.

View the full list of 8th grade tasks here and mark your calendars for these fun and important events!

Students Keeping Falcon Cafe "In Line"

Past QH student Karsen Ferner, now a 9th grader at South Meck, constructed much needed stancheons (line guards) for our Falcon Cafe. Karsen made the stancheons as a Scout project and donated them to QHMS. We are VERY grateful, and like them so much we've asked for more! QH 7th graders Davis Ferner and Zane Davis assisted with the stanchions.

Thank You Quail Hollow PTSA

Hello Falcon Families! Hard to believe we are wrapping up another school year. This year has flown by! We had an amazing year and the members of our QH PTSA executive board could not have accomplished all that we did without the support of all of our hardworking members. Sports Spotlight on Falcon Baseball

submitted by student writer Luke Thompson, 8th grade

Being a part of the Quail Hollow Middle School baseball team for the past two years has been a fantastic experience for me and my teammates. We have definitely learned that you don't need to win to have a good time and improve on the field, and that winning is a combination of things such as; hard work, dedication, competitiveness, and the cohesiveness of the team. I certainly believe that this season every single one of my teammates showed exemplary amounts of all of these things. While our record might have not shown it, all of these qualities were definitely evident through the way we conducted ourselves on the field.

Being a part of the Baseball team at Quail Hollow Middle School has been one of the highlights of my entire middle school career. The opportunity to make new friends, grow closer to friends, play my favorite sport, and grow as a player have been amazing over these past two years. Every practice and game was not only an opportunity to improve my skills and proudly represent my school, but also an opportunity to have a great time with my team. I will never forget the great game that we had playing against Jay M. Robinson this year and being able to be starting pitcher in our first win of the season. Times like these are what made this season such a great time for all of us.

Our team consisted of only eleven players, two of which were injured during a portion of the season leaving us with the minimum players required to play. Even in these conditions, my team never gave up and continued to persevere through hard times. Only six of our team members have had experience on a travel or advanced team, and some of our players had only played baseball for a year or two. It was great to witness more inexperienced players come such a long way in just one season to become good players.

I plan to try out for the South Meck High School Baseball Team next year, and it will be an honor to take all that I learned these past two years on the baseball team at Quail Hollow Middle to the field at South Meck!
