Setting and Plot Development
Influence of the setting on the plot developement
Even if you’re not writing genres where the setting is important, such as a mystery, science fiction or fantasy, you need to know the world where your story takes place. The setting has a tremendous affect on what happens in the story. Can you picture the T.V. show LOST without the deserted island? How would the Maltese Falcon have been different if it took place along the beaches of Florida?
Importance of plot and setting when creating a story
Setting is the time and place where a scene occurs. It can help set the mood, influence the way characters behave, affect the dialog, foreshadow events, invoke an emotional response, reflect the society in which the characters live, and sometimes even plays a part in the story. It can also be a critical element in nonfiction as the setting provides the framework for what is being discussed.
Analyzing different forms of point of view
Point of view is the perspective from which the story is told. The first-person narrator relays the story using “I,” showing the reader what he is seeing and experiencing throughout the story. This narrator is typically the main character, but he can also be a supporting character. The third-person narrator relays the story using “he” or “she,” showing the reader a broader perspective. Third-person narration may be limited to a particular character, revealing only his thoughts, actions and/or feelings or omniscient, relaying many characters’ thoughts, actions and/or feelings.
