Differentiated Instruction
This is an instructional technique that is used to reach children with different learning styles. Each child learns best in his/her own way, and differentiated instruction means that the teacher observes all children to see how he/she can plan instruction that will suit each individual student.
Theorist of the Month
Abraham Maslow's (1908-1970)
Abraham Harold Maslow was an American psychologist who was best known for creating Maslow's hierarchy of needs, a theory of psychological health predicated on fulfilling innate human needs in priority, culminating in self-actualization.
Physiological Needs: the most basic needs of all living creatures
Safety: feeling of comfort, security, and being out of danger
Belongingness: feeling accepted and loved
Self-esteem: a sense of one’s own worth – it takes many positive experiences to build a child's self-esteem, but very few to undermine their confidence
When children’s basic needs have not been met, they may have great difficulty learning and relating positively to others. Creating a caring community is one of the most effective ways to address children’s basic needs for physical and emotional comfort so they can be open to learning and reach their full potential for knowledge and understanding.
