From the Principal
Dear Goodman Middle School Community,
I want to extend to you and your family a very warm welcome to Goodman Middle School. A colleague once wrote that the "middle years are an exciting time when children embark upon new adventures in the world of learning. Each year will provide important transitions and the acquisition of new skills that will enhance each student’s ability to apply learning in many ways." I believe this to be true and Goodman is committed to supporting each child on their personal journey.
My name is Ty Robuck and I have the privilege of being your child's new principal. While I am new to the role of principal at Goodman, I am not new to the community. I was in the first graduating class from Goodman when it first opened its doors in 1991. I have since taught for 10 years and am starting my 10th year as an administrator. My wife, our two children and I live in Gig Harbor and love living and serving in our community.
I am so proud of the work being done around the building. I am so excited to see our students every day. This past week was our first full week of the school year and both the staff and students handled it beautifully. Please take time to review the newsletter and call at any time with questions. I hope you will take a moment to stop by and say hello, and introduce yourself to me.
Respectfully,
Ty Robuck-Principal

PARENT PORTAL
Do you need to update your child's emergency information? This is a critical step in ensuring you receive our emails and important updates as well as having the proper information to contact you in an emergency. Here's how you get started!
How do I get started? Please note depending on the device you are using things may look different!
- Visit powerschool.psd401.net/public and log into your ParentPortal account.
- Select the student you wish to register along the top
- Click the 2018-19 Emergency Contact Update link from the left menu
- If this is the first time you are logging in you will be asked to agree to the terms and conditions - Click begin forms
- You will be asked to enter the date of birth for the student whose form you are working on
Login Tips/Troubleshooting PowerSchool ParentPortal:
- Forgot your login credentials? select the “Forgot username or Password?” link on the Sign In page.
- To create your Parent Portal account, contact your school directly (for High Schools please call the Counseling Office).
- Still having trouble signing in to your existing account, email: powerschool@psd401.net.
Completing your Emergency Contact Update:
- Do I have to answer all the questions? Questions marked with a red asterisk (*) are required.
- What if I make a mistake? If you would like to make a change, click on the underlined field or click “< Prev” to return to a previous page.
- I don’t know what a question is asking. You can contact powerschool@psd401.net to ask any general questions about the form or the Emergency Contact Update process.
I’ve completed the form, now what?
When you have finished entering your information, click “Submit.” This will send all of the information you’ve entered to the school. If you cannot click on this button, you will need to make sure that you have answered all required questions.
What if I have more than one student in the district?
Do I need to do this for each child? Yes, because you’ll need to provide information that is specific for each child. We recommend that you submit one Emergency Contact Update and then start another – this will allow you to “snap over” shared family information, which will save you time.
Having trouble? Please email powerschool@psd401.net
Attendance Matters
September is Attendance Awareness Month.
Attendance matters and we need your help. What is considered good attendance? Data shows students should not miss more than 9 days in a school year to stay engaged, successful and on track for graduation. This breaks down to no more than 1 absence per month.
Every minute of our school day provides opportunities for learning-including the days leading up to, and after a scheduled school break. Please help us support your student by minimizing absences.
The Attendance Window is the place for your student to take care of bus notes and early dismissals. It is open daily from 8:00am-8:15am.
Early Dismissals: Please send your student with a note to bring to the attendance window first thing in the morning for an early dismissal pass. They will be able to meet you in the front of the building at the designated time. For an unplanned early release, please call the main office at 253.530.1600 and we can have your student waiting in the office for you.
Late Arrivals: If your student has a morning appointment, please call the attendance line at 253.530.1607 with an estimated arrival time.
Bus Notes: If your student needs to take a different bus or go to a different stop they will need a bus pass. Send your student with a note or call the main office at 253.530.1600. Transportation change requests are available until 1:45 pm.
Occasionally there will be times that your student will not be able to attend school. In those instances please call the attendance line-anytime at 253.530.1607. It is available 24 hours a day 7 days a week. All absences must be excused within 48 hours.

Cell Phone Policy At Goodman
This year the staff at Goodman have begun working on a few new policies to ensure consistency across the building. One of these is the use of cell phones. Our current policy is still a work in progress but we have started the year with the current outline. Please help us with this policy. If you need to contact your child please call the school directly and we will either bring your child to the office to make a call or send them a message. Also, if you are receiving texts from your child during the day, please ask them that evening when they are texting and review the policy with them. Thank you for your support with this.
Use of electronic devices during class time for purposes other than those pre-approved by the teacher, may result in the device being confiscated and held by administration. Students are not allowed to send texts or make calls from their personal devices during the school day without receiving permission from a staff member. Students are not allowed to take photos or videos at school without receiving permission from a staff member.
Appropriate Use / Locations
Before the 5 minute bell in the Commons (use of headphones is allowed)
During class when and where the teacher designates use for learning
Photos & videos with staff & student permission
After school
During Honor Time
Inappropriate Use / Locations
During Emergency drills
PE locker rooms and restrooms
During class without teacher permission
Hallway, office, gym, library and nurse areas

Bring electronic devices at your own risk. Students are encouraged to lock their devices in lockers during the school day. If a student decides to carry an electronic device on their person, it must be stored out of sight and set to silent mode so that it does not become a distraction to learning.
If the cell phone or personal electronic device is found to be in use during the day without permission, it may be confiscated. On the first offense, the student may pick up the device from the office at the end of the day. On the second offense, the student may also be assigned a lunch detention. On the third or subsequent violations, the student may be assigned other appropriate disciplinary action.
