Where Does My Family Fit?

By: Devin Brownstein

Ray Ezrol

Ray Ezrol is my great grandmother. She was born on December 9, 1910. She grew up in Bensonhurst, New York. Her mother died when she was only 13 so Ray was in charge of the other five siblings. Her family was fairly poor so she had to skip college to help support her family. Women were not given the opportunity that they have now so it was very hard to find a job. She because a dancer and went by the name Ray Costa.

Dancing Career

Ray was an exemplary dancer. At the age of 16, she teamed up with a man named Gino Daro. They formed a dancing team that went by the name Daro and Costa. They traveled all around the world performing at pristine venues. They performed at the Savoy Hotel. The Savoy Hotel was one of the most well known hotels in England at the time. Ray's dad made their costumes because her dad was a tailor. She was dancing around the world for over 10 years. She was a fantastic dancer for her age.

Ray didn't have both of her parents to support her when she was a child. She was very independent because of this. In 1924, she met Max Jacobson. They married in 1926 and stayed together for a very long time. They had two kids. Alan Jacobson and Ronald Jacobson were their children. Ray Jacobson passed away on September 11, 2000, exactly one year before 9/11.
