Haymarket Happenings

May 2020

On the homestretch!

Last May, I wrote a note to all you parents about how our success is measured by our partnership as an entire school community. I couldn't be more proud to serve our teachers, students and families after this challenging year! Our teachers continue to put their all into teaching and finishing strong so we can positively effect each and every Cub. We, like you all want our kids back in person as soon as possible, but we continue to follow guidance from the PWCS School Board and Dr. Walts and his staff. We continue to remind students that this isn't a time to be lax on mitigation strategies, with two of the most important being wearing face coverings properly and keeping 6ft of distance. Tune into the School Board meeting on Tuesday, May 5th to hear more about the current plans come the fall.

Couple other general informational items:

  1. Our building is still on a modified closure status. There is no timetable for when we will open our doors to parents and visitors. Please know what once we know, we will share with you. This decision is made at the County level, not the school level.
  2. PTO and Advisory need help! We have positions open that we need good parents like you to commit to as a way to help our partnership stay strong! Please consider coming to ask questions, just listen...anything! A full Advisory and PTO is VERY important to the success of HMES as a whole!

Lastly, it is Teacher Appreciation Week this week! Please check your email for some ideas to show your love of our teachers! A special thank you to our PTO, Mrs. Lattanzi, and some local businesses for making this week a special week for our teachers!

May 7th is National Children's Mental Health Awareness Day

PWCS recognizes May as Mental Health Awareness Month with the theme "You Are NOT Alone":

In partnership with the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), PWCS recognizes May as Mental Health Awareness Month. Now more than ever, it is essential to prioritize the mental health of loved ones and take steps to stay connected with friends, family, and peers. No one should feel alone in their mental health journey or without the resources and support they need.

One in six youth aged 6-17 experiences a mental health condition each year and more than 51 million adults in the United States face the reality of managing a mental illness every day.

We would like for all staff, students, and community members to wear green on that day in recognition of the important role positive mental health plays in the development of youth.

Counselor's Corner

Welcome May! We love seeing so many of your students back in person. We are excited to be a physical part of their learning again. As always, Mrs. Schenck, Mrs. Criser, and Ms. Scott are always happy to speak with your child/children! Check out office hours Tuesday-Thursday from 12:15 pm-1:15 pm via Canvas (HMES Counseling course). Select Zoom on the left column!

We love seeing your child/children during our Encore lessons and popping into their classes in the room and on zoom! A lot of grade levels focused on problem solving. Be sure to ask your child about the Problem-Solving Star! This is a great tool to use and consistency between home and school is always beneficial to our students. If you have any questions about using it, please reach out to our counselors.

New reading app in Clever!

PWCS has added a new Reading app to Clever called Sora. This app allows PWCS students to have safe and convenient access to hundreds of age-appropriate e-books and digital audiobooks from the PWC Public Library System (PWPLS). Sora is available for use on any device at school, home, and anywhere 24/7. Sora offers engaging reading opportunities with fun avatars and achievements within the platform to encourage a focus on learning. In partnership with PWPLS, Sora also connects seamlessly with their digital collection to provide access to even more age-appropriate digital books.

To access Sora, help your student get to Clever. Go to the PWCS Resources and click on the SORA app.

Your child should have immediate access to hundreds of books as described above.

5th Grade Promotion

Recent guidance from Governor stating Current state guidance does allow for 50 people to gather inside a location and 100 to gather outside a location while utilizing proper mitigation techniques. This is challenging due to the shear number of 5th graders alone we have at HMES. So, for that reason we will be planning for a drive through celebration along with a virtual Flipgrid style celebration much like last year. Plan on the graduation parade being on Friday, June 11th around mid afternoon. Plan to decorate your cars, have signs...anything to make the event special for you child! We will be doing everything we can here, including giving students shirts, having yard signs for you parents to pick up at school, music, and more! Stay tuned for more information!

Spring PALS note:

Prince William County Public Schools will be administering the Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening (PALS) during the April 30 – May 25 time period to certain students in grades K - 3.

This assessment measures a child’s knowledge of several important literacy fundamentals: phonological awareness, concept of word, knowledge of letter sounds and spelling. PALS provides a direct means of matching literacy instruction to specific literacy needs and provides a means of identifying those children who are relatively behind in their acquisition of these fundamental literacy skills and are at risk of reading difficulties. Teachers can use the results to more effectively plan their instruction to meet the needs of each student.

All teachers in PWCS rely on the assistance of parents to support learning. You can support your child on this assessment by encouraging your child to do his or her best. You can also ensure that your child has enough sleep the evening before the test is given and has eaten a proper meal the morning of the testing,

Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions.

Please use the link below to share some input about the placement of your child for next school year. Specific teacher requests are not part of the form on purpose, but we do like to match up the characteristics of a teacher with what you believe your child needs. This form will be open until the end of the school year. Click below to access the form.
