Hillcrest Orchards
Our field trip to the apple orchards was a lot of fun! We had beautiful weather and and we were able to experience a variety of different activities while we were at the orchards. Your students learned about the apple growing and picking process. Students learned about cows and were able to milk a real cow named Buttercup! We visited a petting zoo and were able to feed, pet, and enjoy some time with the animals. We ate a picnic lunch together. Students had a fun time racing a classmate down the large slides. We finished our day with some fun pig races... your students were all rooting for "Pig-A-Chu"! :)
I hope your students had many stories to share when they arrived home on Wednesday afternoon.
Make sure you check out our homeroom app for more pictures from this special day together!
Important Reminders!
1. Pumpkin Reports:
These are due on MONDAY!! The book report and book review should be quality work - refer to our rubric to ensure your child is turning in quality work. Please drop your child's pumpkin off on the "2nd Grade display table" on the hallway near the gym. We will stop by in the morning to show off our pumpkins and create a label for our pumpkins. We will display these pumpkins for a week and your child should take their pumpkin home on Friday, November 4th!
THIS PUMPKIN BOOK REPORT PROJECT WILL COUNT AS THEIR CHAPTER BOOK FOR OUR OCTOBER READING LOGS!
2. Every Kid Votes:
On Tuesday, November 1st, students in kindergarten through 3rd grade will be participating in Every Kid Votes, a nation-wide mock election to promote citizenship and provide students with a fun hands-on voting experience. Since these elections only come around every so often, we will use this election as a teachable moment for our elementary students! This is a great way to teach our students about our government, our President, and civic responsibilities in a realistic and exciting way. For the past three elections, Every Kid Votes' mock election has predicted the outcome of the official election on November 8th! We are very excited to give students a chance to use a polling booth, send them home with an "I Voted" sticker, and teach lessons that help to explain the voting process and our right as citizens to take part.
3. Uniform Reminder:
As the cooler weather approaches, please be reminded that your child can only wear their FSA fleece jacket inside our classroom. Any other jackets are not permitted inside the classroom. Of course, students can always wear jackets out to recess if it is chilly! However, inside our classroom only the FSA fleece is allowed.
4. Monday:
NO costumes are allowed on Monday. Not all of our students celebrate the Halloween holiday. Please make sure your child is in school uniform on Monday, October 31st.
Pumpkin Fun!
2nd grade classes joined together for a fun afternoon of pumpkin forces & motion activities. Together we read the story "The Rollaway Pumpkin" and discussed the different types of forces & motion we could identify in the story. Students are doing a great job using their force & motion science vocabulary to explain. We then rolled pumpkins down the hallway and recorded our findings, comparing the motion of a pumpkin to the motion of a ball. Last, we headed outside for a "rollaway pumpkin" competition! Each 2nd grade class rolled a pumpkin down the hill, we discussed the forces and motion, we recorded our findings, and we answer science questions about the MOTION of our pumpkins.
In the afternoon, we finally carved a pumpkin in small groups while students also write about their favorite pumpkin recipe in a How To story format.
It was a very fun day to be in 2nd Grade :)
