Newsletter for Five Oaks and Rachel Carson Middle School
A LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Five Oaks and Rachel Carson Families,
We have had many challenges this school year. The ongoing renovation and reconfiguration of classrooms has resulted in revising supervision duties. Many parents are aware that we have seen an increase in hallway behaviors. The adults in the school are making every effort to coach students on appropriate hallway behavior. Students must walk on the right side of the hall. Keep voices low and refrain from shouting. Respond to everyone, especially adults respectfully. It is a work in progress. It is our goal for everyone to feel safe at school.
I have made the decision after 15 years in the Beaverton School District and over 30 years in education to retire at the end of the school year. It is not decision that I made quickly or easily. This school has an incredible staff who care for the welfare of all the students. So often I run into former students that recognize me and I love hearing about their lives and their accomplishments. I will finish out the school year and turn over the school to a new principal. I hope to do some traveling with my husband and family. Spending more time with my grandchildren is at the top of my list of priorities. I have loved working here and know that I will feel some sadness when the 2020 / 21 school year begins.
As inclement weather approaches and school closures might be in the future. On mornings where you’re unsure about whether, school is closed or starting late, please check the BSD website as well as local TV and radio stations. The website should have a statement on the homepage and, if not, click “emergency alerts” in the Quick Links section on the left. If we are closed, then no one will be answering the phone. We are not always able to have a message on the school phone in the event of closures.

REPORT CARDS ARE GOING PAPERLESS
The Beaverton School District is transitioning to electronic report cards for all students. Progress period 1 is the last time paper progress reports/report cards will be mailed. The electronic report cards will be accessed through ParentVUE (mobile and desktop). Parents/guardians who have not yet set up a ParentVUE account will need to do so by January 2020.
There are resources and guidance on how to set up a ParentVue account. Please view the FAQ for instructions on setting up an account.
There are several benefits to moving to paperless report cards. Families will be able to view grades days after grading days, rather than wait up to two weeks for a report card to come by mail or in their child’s backpack. In addition, moving away from paper is environmentally friendly and cost-effective for the District.
Please contact the school if you need help setting up or accessing your ParentVUE account or need assistance with a printed copy.
PTO UPDATE
A big shout out to all the parents who donated soups/breads/salads/desserts for our wonderful staff during the Wednesday night conference dinner in October. We also treated them to a Qdoba lunch on Thursday. The effort was very appreciated by all.
McTeacher Night was a big success raising over $700 and a fun time to hang out with teachers and friends as well. Apparently the teachers had such a fun time they want to do it again in the spring! So-keep your eyes out for information on that. In November there will be another Dinner Night Out at the Thirsty Lion in Tanasbourne on Wednesday, Nov 6th. The event runs all day-there will be a flyer sent out that you can print, show on your phone or just mention to your server that you are there for the event. 20% of your check will be donated to FO/RC.
Our next meeting will be Monday, Nov 18th at 6:30 at the school. We will be voting on open board positions and discussing the main catalog fundraiser for Jan/Feb 2020. Please attend if you are interested in filling a board position, helping with fundraising or just keeping up with school activities and getting to know other FO/RC parents. Hope to see you there! The December meeting will be Mon Dec 16th at 6:30pm

A note from our Attendance Secretary
Attendance reminders:
Early Pickup for appts: Please send a note in with your student before school and we will write them a pass to come to the office at the time you need them. This will eliminate disruptions to the classroom teaching environment and reduce your waiting time in the office.
Please call 503-356-2601 if your student will be missing school. Provide their student ID, first and last name and date of absence.
After School clubs are now being offered on Tuesday's and Thursday's. They begin right after school and end at 4:45pm. Your student must have transportation either through an activity bus or parent pick up. If parents are picking up, you must be at the school by 4:50 as teachers and staff need to go home. Please have your student check in with Mrs. Redding in the main office to verify if they have been assigned an activity bus route. They can be added if needed, but it takes a week to be set up through transportation.
Also, students interested in participating in a club MUST sign up every time for attendance reasons. Sign ups are posted by 7:30 am on Tues/Thurs in the cafeteria and are displayed until 11am.
