Dear Parents,
This conference is a celebration and sharing of your child’s school efforts and progress. Since both you and your child are relatively new at this, you will need to help your child through the process. Let your child set the pace. Encourage discussion. Don’t just race through the papers. You do not need to discuss each paper in detail. As your child shows you the papers, you may wish to choose two or three papers of different types on which to comment or ask questions. Ask questions or make positive comments, which show you are interested in the skill the paper shows your child was able to do, not what was wrong. (Example, “What does this mean?” “Can you show me how you did this?” or “I can see you have worked hard to learn this____.” Not, “You can do better than this, your work should be much neater…or How come you missed this? I know you can do this so what’s the right answer?”)
When commenting on written work, which demonstrates creativity, be a cheerleader. Remember this is a first grader just learning to apply skills independently. It is hard work to use the skills, be creative, and produce a perfect paper. Also remember that explaining the papers to you may not always be easy. If your child finds this difficult, just ask a few questions and move on. This is part of the learning process for you child.
Your child is developing academically and socially. There are spurts of growth as well as times of slow and steady progress. There are times of achievement and times of difficulty. Your encouragement and support is essential. This conference should be an opportunity for you to offer these to your child. Share in the pride of their learning!
We hope you each find this a valuable and enjoyable learning experience!
Toys Stay at Home

Our lost & found is overflowing with coats, sweaters, lunch boxes, etc. Please remind your children to check it for their things. We donate everything to charity at the end of the semester. Items will be located in the main hallway during Open House. Please stop by and see if you recognize anything!

What Are We Learning?
Language Arts and Social Studies
In Language Arts we are reviewing nouns (common vs proper; singular vs plural; and irregular plural nouns. We have also begun learning how to write friendly letters. We continue to work on using lower case letters in our writing unless a capital letter is needed, correct punctuation, and word spacing. In reading we are focusing on making inferences in our reading. We talk a lot about how readers are thinkers!
In social studies, we continue our unit on history and the focus on how technology has changed the way we communicate, travel, play, and learn.
Math
Science
