A Message from Tedd
April 21, 2023
WEbster Nation,
Here we go! It's hard to believe we are already in the home stretch of the 22-23 school year. We've still got lots to do in our final few months and look forward to a strong finish. You all look rested from the break and ready to support student thinking and learning. We are thrilled to have our students back on campus this week and have loved hearing about their adventures over the break. Enjoy a peek into how our community spent its holiday.
With gratitude,
Tedd

DESIGN THINKING
Design challenges are a fabulous way to spark creative thinking and problem solving. Giving kids opportunities to work these brain muscles strengthens the neural pathways that lead to deep learning. Mrs. Harris charged her kids with building the tallest freestanding tower using only 20 note cards and 16 paper clips. The engagement is palpable.
HAPPY HARVESTS
Magic is happening in the PreK/TK Garden! This week, with Justine's tremendous guidance, TK gardeners harvested 114 fava beans... and there are many more to come! We estimated, counted, grouped into 10s, measured, and peeled them all! Then, with Ms. Neci's help, we roasted the beans in our classroom with a sprinkling of olive oil, salt, and pepper! They were incredibly delicious! Lots of love from TK!
THE HENNA CREATION
A new and long-awaited student business idea hits Webster next week. 4th graders Lux and Juniper, after months of contemplation, have gotten themselves together, thought through the details, and will be launching their temporary tattoo business next week. Their business will require a parent authorization before any student is able to receive one of the many henna designs offered by the duo. I wonder what unexpected learning will arise from this endeavor. How will they manage time and appointments? How will they address quality and customer satisfaction? Allowing students to engage in this kind of thinking is how deep learning occurs. Don't worry, the tattoos are NOT PERMANENT. The Henna Creation has decided to donate their profits to the Webster PTA. Good luck, ladies!
Creature Comforts
As the weather begins to warms up, our beautiful little canyon campus will be visited by a host of interesting critters. This week, we are already beginning to see some familiar faces around Webster. Every wildlife sighting is an opportunity to teach our kiddos about respect, safety, and the wonder of the natural world. Safety is always the primary concern, but right behind that is our desire for students to develop a healthy respect for and a deep interest in the animals with which we share the planet. This week we saw a Western Fence Lizard, a good-sized grasshopper, and a Pacific Gopher Snake. We will be on the lookout for more cool creatures around campus.
We are so excited for the return of the Webster Community Camp Out! The event will take place Sat, April 29th on the fields at Webster campus. Attendees can look forward to an evening of fun-filled activities, some friendly camp competitions, dinner, an outdoor evening screening, and breakfast before returning home to our modern creature comforts. Bring your own camping gear and tents, but fear not if they're still sitting in a sealed box! We will have Camp Counselors on site and willing to assist with set up and tear down of all your camping gear. THIS IS NOT A DROP OFF EVENT!!

WORTH A LISTEN
For those of you who love a good podcast and believe that education needs a thorough rethinking, this is the one for you. My partners and co-founders of Sycamore, AJ Webster and Christy Durham, created an engaging and enlightening look at the need for innovation in education. Experienced and well-researched, these two pioneers dig deep into the current systemic problems and provide insight into a possible future. I'm beyond proud of AJ and Christy and feel lucky to have been able to work alongside them for so many years.

Developing character and growth mindsets is invaluable and will be a major focus of ours here at Webster over the years. As we build community here on campus, at home, and across Malibu, we will continue to model the kind of behavior that promotes unity and kindness. In addition, we will notice and value it in each other.
