Greetings from the Principal
Dear Riverview families,
Our school experienced a unique circumstance on Monday, February 22, that tested our safety procedures and tugged the emotions of staff and parents alike. On behalf of our staff, I would like to sincerely thank the Shawnee Police Department who helped with this matter in keeping everyone safe. I am proud of all Riverview educators and staff members who put our “Shelter-In-Place” training into action to protect our students.
What does Shelter-In-Place mean?
In case you were wondering what the term ‘Shelter-In-Place’ means, it is our way of communicating that there is something “outside” that prevents students from leaving the building, but does not pose any immediate danger to students if they are inside the school. For example, ‘Shelter-In-Place’ protocol would be appropriate if there is a potential gas leak in a neighborhood near the school, or if there is an outside concern that is not immediately placing students in harm’s way. In many cases, we also lock the exterior door.
‘Shelter-In-Place’ broadly means that the school maintains its normal operations inside, and students are able to freely move about the building, with minimal changes in schedule or disruption to their day. On Monday, February 22, we were in “Shelter-In-Place.”
What is a Lockdown?
Should anything be deemed an immediate threat to the school and pose an imminent danger, this would trigger more intensive precautions, moving to a ‘lockdown’ status. Under this scenario, travel is restricted inside the building. Some media reports on Monday indicated that Riverview was under a ‘lockdown.’ Members of the media may have been confused because our exterior doors remained locked. Our district did communicate with the media that the action on Monday was Shelter-In-Place.
Please trust that the school emergency management team works in conjunction with district personnel and outside agencies to determine the safest plan of action specific to each unique circumstance. Nothing is more important to anyone in the community than the safety of the school children. If the decision is ever made to go to shelter-in-place or lockdown, parents will be notified via text and email. We do our best to communicate with parents and will continue to seek improvement.
Thank you for your support, and make it a great week!

Harvesters has collaborated with Riverview Elementary to bring the BackSnack Program to our school. The backpack will be sent home with your student every Friday, or the last day of the school week. This food is for your child to enjoy over the weekend when there is not enough food when school meals are not available. If you would like more information about this program please contact Kerry O'Keefe-Owens at (913) 441-0808 or kokeefeowens@usd232.org
