Conceptual Pilot Program by RKT
Call to Action!
This proposal is based on data, and witness from students who have dropped out of high school. This along with research and a thesis I am writing for a Psychology course in Rochester college (Link Below)
After years of being in the field as principal, dean mentor, teacher, and advocate for the at-risk student in high school. The essence of the challenge is not in the abyss of the drop out crises - it is held deep within in the middle school years. In high school, I am just a doctor in a triage M.A.S.H. unit (Please see link below for that theory of mine)
The question that begs itself is this...
If there were more resources in the middle school years of a student at risk, would that middle schoolers trajectory be the same?
In essence, if the at-risk student had support, accountability formation and education (Virtus et Scientia) in the middle school years would that same student still have the challenges they endured in high school and eventually drop out?
The dropout statistics in America have created CRISES! This drop out crises affects everyone, (The Mouse Trap) and indeed if 1/4 of our student's drop out of high school that is like one wheel falling off a car at full speed! Would you be in crises if you were driving and wheel blows out and falls off? Indeed, this is the situation the crises the mess we are in here in the United States of America!
My proposal is this...
I am going to create a middle school program for students who are at risk in the trajectory of them dropping out in their high school career.
Based on my triple A policy - Academics, Attendance and Action.
(This is in the M.A.S.H link)
The program will be based upon the Exemplary Practices of the National Alternative Educational Association.
The students will be referred by the Flint Michigan court system in Genesee County. Truancy, Mental health, Family and drug courts. Utilizing this as a referral along with parents that come forward because their current school situation with their at-risk child is at a critical stage and will only get worse.
These adolescent students are much more pliable if you will in their development mentally than the students in high school who have been hardened by their failures, situations and action and reaction within their school system.
If I can create the same essence of a quintessential program as I have with my high school students when I served as Principal and Dean in alternative High School, then my hypothesis (backed up with testimony of students in 12th grade who have dropped out) then I believe 100% that these students have a high chance of surviving in the high school setting, armed with the skills, both educationally and emotionally to be successful in high school and in life.
We as a society will either pay now or 10x later for an adolescent who would drop out of school and ultimately live off the state or not put into the system the potential they can.
Data on how much America pays for jails and such is criminal itself.
Highschool Alternative Education is TRIAGE ~
The post education is indeed what I have found out be the missing link (Link below) This is when an 18-year-old senior in high school most of the time when they are 17 - 18 and have the credits of a freshman. The psychological hell this student goes through is that of (Why try-I &^%$@## QUIT) This is the time when my program of adult education comes in and supports them through the process in an individual learning plan to acquire a GED and prepare for the workforce as opposed to the life on welfare and underpaying jobs.
Who will join me in this most difficult work and mission?
Yes indeed it is an Impossible Dream, yet every day this program and others like it are not supported, is another day a young person gives up on themselves and enters into the depths of the abyss of the drop out crises in America!
Thank you

Top Three Solutions:
1. Develop a Middle School Support Program for at-risk youth that would serve as
an early intervention and transition to existing high school programs.
a. Resources: GISD and existing alternative education high schools.
b. Next steps: GearUp2Lead Pilot project application in process for program
at SBEV.
Give us the toughest students that schools do not want!
I am in the dust - who will join me?
Proposal
This program is for students who are sick of it and are ready to take responsibility for their education and stop playing school and actually have a plan.
This is for middle school students who are at risk of dropping out of high school by empirical data of Academics, Attendance and Action.
It is also for the 17.5-year-old to 21-year-old students in the GearUpAcademy who are ready to take full responsibility for their education and future and want to be peer mentors to the middle school students.
With a plan to be successful and utilizing a scientific, empirical data strategy the student will plan their work and work their plan.
I call this the Pre and Post Triage in Education...
Welcome to the journey...

United States Military Phonetic Alphabet
United States Military Phonetic Alphabet
You’ve probably seen military movies before where the actors portraying military members recite a series of words and numbers that don’t seem to make any sense. You were most likely hearing the Military Phonetic Alphabet, which is an open code used to communicate letters phonetically to ensure the communication is clear.
MILITARY PHONETIC ALPHABET
Why does the military use the Military Phonetic Alphabet?
Because many letters sound similar when recited over the phone or radio. Think of all the letters that end with a long “E” sound: B, C, D, E, G, P, T, V, Z. These letters can sound similar when run together quickly or over a crackled radio or poor phone connection. When you see the corresponding letter/word combination in the Military Phonetic Alphabet you will see there is very little room for error.
Why use an open code for the Military Phonetic Alphabet?
I know what you’re thinking – What good is a code when everyone knows it? The point of the Military Phonetic Alphabet isn’t to hide communications, it is to communicate more effectively by eliminating errors. The Military Phonetic Alphabet reduces the chances of misinterpreting the verbal communication because each letter/word combination is unique enough that it can’t be confused with another letter, but the sounds of individual letters can be easily confused.
The other thing to remember is that the Military Phonetic Alphabet is most often used in open communications that aren’t necessarily secret, but need to be quickly and accurately understood. Think for example, of an air traffic controller directing an airplane toward to the correct approach or heading. The Military Phonetic Alphabet is also used to label sectors or divisions on a map or encampment. For example, it is easier for everyone if a row of tents is labeled Alpha Row, Bravo Row, etc., than if each row of tents was given a traditional “street name” like Main Street, Maple Lane, etc.
Did you know there are other phonetic alphabets used by other military services? See this list from Wikipedia.
What is the Military Phonetic Alphabet?
- A – Alpha
- B – Bravo
- C – Charlie
- D – Delta
- E – Echo
- F – Foxtrot
- G – Golf
- H – Hotel
- I – India
- J – Juliet
- K – Kilo
- L – Lima
- M – Mike
- N – November

- P – Papa
- Q – Quebec
- R – Romeo
- S – Sierra
- T – Tango

Support Self-Efficacy
The following is from the field of psychology and I present to you that if STUDENT is inserted for CLIENT is in the following text - It shall indeed become an epiphany.
-----
Support Self-Efficacy
Many clients do not have a well-developed sense of self-efficacy and find it difficult to believe that they can begin or maintain behavioral change.
Improving self-efficacy requires eliciting and supporting hope, optimism, and the feasibility of accomplishing change.
This requires you to recognize the client's strengths and bring these to the forefront whenever possible. Unless a client believes change is possible, the perceived discrepancy between the desire for change and feelings of hopelessness about accomplishing change is likely to result in rationalizations or denial in order to reduce discomfort.
Because self-efficacy is a critical component of behavior change, it is crucial that you as the clinician also believe in your clients' capacity to reach their goals.

Invictus
William Ernest Henley, 1849 - 1903
Out of the night that covers me, Black as the Pit from pole to pole, I thank whatever gods may be For my unconquerable soul. In the fell clutch of circumstance I have not winced nor cried aloud. Under the bludgeonings of chance My head is bloody, but unbowed. Beyond this place of wrath and tears Looms but the Horror of the shade, And yet the menace of the years Finds, and shall find, me unafraid. It matters not how strait the gate, How charged with punishments the scroll, I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul.

GROWTH MINDSET
EMPATHY
ACTION
RESPONSIBILITY
Growth Mindset:
The belief that we can grow and better ourselves every day and that intelligence, aptitude, and resilience are not something that are fixed at birth. A necessary ingredient of Growth Mindset is a willingness to make the effort required for a life of learning.
Empathy:
Awareness of the feelings and emotions of other people. Empathy goes far beyond sympathy, which might be considered ‘feeling for’ someone. Empathy, instead, is ‘feeling with’ that person, through the use of imagination.
Action:
Doing what’s required to achieve our goals. Sam did not use his Progeria as an excuse for inaction. Instead, he overcame barriers and was an active leader at school and in his community.
Responsibility:
The willingness to take on and fulfill obligations that contribute to the betterment of our community as well as ourselves.
Each GEAR will be defined and explained through real-life examples, as well as discussed and practiced by students through various activities. When used together, these components provide the GEARs that will start the process of building true leaders.
