Claim / Thesis Statement

Characters in the novel Walk Two Moons misjudge three characters because they fail to 'walk two moons in their moccasins,' these judgments are later proven wrong.

Mrs. Cadaver

Several misjudgments were made about Mrs. Cadaver. Salamanca and Phoebe thought Mrs. Cadaver killed, chopped up, and buried her husband. ''I have seen her chop down trees and lug the remains clear across her backyard. Do you know what I think? I think she killed Mr. Cadaver and chopped him up and buried him in the backyard.'' - Pg. 32

Later in the novel they are proven wrong by Mr. Birkway, ''Her husband died when a drunk driver rammed into his car. My mother - Mrs. Partridge - was also in the car with Mr. Cadaver, she didn't die, as you know, but she lost her sight.'' - Pg. 219.

Another judgment made by Sal was that she thought Mr. Hiddle, her dad, loved Mrs. Cadaver and was forgetting Sal's mom. ''I hoped Mr. Birkway would fall in love with Margaret Cadaver and would marry her and ale her away so that my father and I could go back to Bybanks.'' - Pg. 116. Salamanca was later proven wrong by Mrs. Cadaver herself,'' 'Are you going to marry him?' ' Goodness!' she said 'It's a little early for that. He's holding on to me because I was with your mother and held her hands in her last moments. Your father isn't ready to love anyone else yet. Your mother was one of a kind.' That's true. She was.'' - Pg. 271 & 272.

Mike Bickle

Mike Bickle was misjudged by characters such as, Sal and Phoebe, many times. Mike Bickle visited Phoebe's house for the first time and Phoebe already misjudged him for being an escaped, crazy lunatic. '' Sal, do you detect any sign of lunacy? There doesn't appear to be any place he could be hiding a gun. His jeans are really tight. Maybe he has a knife tucked into his socks.'' - Pg. 43, and ''Phoebe was certain the man was going to ambush us.'' - Pg. 45. Salamanca and Phoebe found out they were wrong because Mrs. Wnterbottom told Phoebe and Sal who the crazy lunatic, Mike Bickle, really was. ''Mrs. WInterbottom said, 'Mike is my son'.'' - Pg. 248

The first time there was a message on Phoebe's porch, she thought the potential lunatic, Mike Bickle, left it there, ''I believe she thought it came from the potential lunatic. '' - Pg. 52. Phoebe understood she misjudged him when she saw Mrs. Partridge leaving a message on her porch, '' 'You've been creeping around leaving those things, haven't you?' 'Did you like them?' Mrs. Partridge said.'' -Pg. 253.

Mrs. Winterbottom

throughout the book Mrs. Winterbottom is misjudged by several characters. Sal came to Phoebe's house for the first time and already misjudged Mrs. Winterbottom, ''I had a funny feeling that Mrs. Winterbottom did not actually like all this baking and cleaning and laundry and shopping, and I'm not quite sure why I had that feeling because if you just listened to the words she said, it sounded as if she was Mrs. Supreme Housewife.'' - Pg. 30. Sal was only partly right, she didn't like baking and cleaning and laundry and shopping, but she wasn't Mrs. Supreme Houswife, but she just wanted to be respectable, '' 'George, I know you will think I am not - or was not - respectable, but it was before I met you, and I couldn't bear to think of it and--' '' - Pg. 248

Phoebe and Sal went to the college Mike Bickle went to because they wanted to find out what he had done to Mrs. Winterbottom, instead, they found Mrs. Winterbottom there but she was doing something completely different then Sal and Phoebe did, '' 'Phoebe---' On the bench was Phoebe's mother, and she was kissing the lunatic.'' -Pg. 235. Salamanca and Phoebe both thought Mrs. Winterbottom was dating Mike BIckle, but Mrs. Winterbottom told them about Mike and who he was, '' Mrs. Winterbottom said ' Mike is my son. ' '' -Pg. 248

Mr. Winterbottom was mad at Mrs. WInterbottom because he didn't get why she couldn't tell him and he thought she was lying, '' 'What's all this with respectable? It's not respectable I'm concerned about I'm more concerned that you couldn't- or wouldn't - tell me about any of this.' '' -Pg. 249. Mrs. Winterbottom told him why she couldn't tell him, she was scared of what it would mean, '' Mrs. WInterbottom stood up. 'Mike found me, and at first I was frightened of what that would mean. I've lived such a tiny life---'. '' -Pg. 248.

Conclusion

In the novel Walk Two Moons, Sharon Creech uses her characters to misjudge other characters because they had to learn how to walk two moons in someone else's moccasins. Salamanca and Phoebe misjudged Mike Bickle's identity, Mr. Cadaver's death, why Sal's dad is dating Mrs. Cadaver, why Mrs. Cadaver acts the way she does, Mrs. Winterbottom's feelings and why she went away, they judged all these people and they failed to walk two moons in their moccasins.
