From the Administration
Recently, you received your child's Winter MAP Report for Reading and Math for students in Grades 1 through 5. The report showed growth from Fall to Winter in addition to historical performance.
Now that we are well beyond the mid-point of the school year, we wanted to share how we discuss student growth and progress at LES. Discussing student growth and progress is one of the most important things we do as a staff. Beyond the informal talks that happen between teachers, we have formal processes when it comes to discussing student growth. One formal process is data conversations. Every month grade level teachers and support staff get together to discuss the Reading and Math progress of all students.
We focus on multiple data points including MAP (Measure of Academic Progress) scores. The use of MAP allows for teachers to look at students in similar skill groups to plan and provide instruction according to the skills they are ready to learn. In some cases, we design interventions for the students who need additional support. The following month we check on the success of these interventions. This data-driven process has been very successful in helping to ensure students do not “fall through the cracks”. The second process is our Instructional Intervention Team (IIT). IIT is a peer problem-solving approach where two staff members work together to design interventions (academic or behavioral) for a specific student. This, too, is a data-driven model, and data is systematically tracked to see if the intervention is working. We are very proud of our approaches. I wanted to share them with you to let you know that we are regularly talking about your children and working to ensure their education is appropriate and complete.
Spring Break
Although the Spring Break this year is shortened, we hope you are able to enjoy the time with family and friends. When students return on April 4, we start our final push towards the end of the 2017-18 school year.
Please note that we will not issue a Lisbon Lines Newsletter for the next two weeks due to Spring Break. Our next issue will be on April 13.

Media Gift Fund donation forms are sent home throughout the school year for all students. Forms for students celebrating birthdays in March and April were placed in student mailboxes on Monday this week. Forms for birthdays in July, August, September, October, November, December, January and February were sent home previously but can be sent home again at your request by emailing Mrs. Hastings at slhastings@hcpss.org.
Your tax deductible donation truly does help fortify the collection of books in our school Media Center and are enjoyed by our students and teachers for many years. If you would like to donate a book for another special reason (such as a great report card, a lost tooth, to commemorate a great sports season, to celebrate earning a badge in Scouts, Fifth Grade Graduation or any other occasion) please visit www.lisbonpta.org where you can find the form that you need under the Forms & Documents link. Thank you for your continued support!
Square One Art
It's just about time to order your child artwork on keepsakes through our Square One Art fundraiser!
Coming home soon will be your child’s custom catalog featuring their artwork. Won’t you help make your child feel like an accomplished artist by purchasing keepsakes for the whole family containing their masterpiece? Lisbon Elementary earns profit from every order. And as a thank you for participating, we provide each child with a sheet of stickers imprinted with their artwork — absolutely FREE!
Watch for more details about the campaign and order deadlines. All online and paper order forms must be turned in by the due date on your child’s custom catalog. (No late orders can be accepted.) Together, we can help support the school, build your child’s self-esteem, and create lasting keepsakes from your child’s artistic achievements.
Science Fair
Your child is invited to participate in this year’s Science Fair on Monday, May 14th during the Lisbon Lions Lollapalooza from 6:30-8:00 pm. The Lollapalooza is a popular event that showcases the remarkable things our extraordinary students have done this year at Lisbon Elementary School.
If your child is interested in doing a Science Investigation, Collection, or Invention at home, please visit the Lisbon Elementary School website (les.hcpss.org) to download documents with further information and instructions. Once your child has identified a project, also download, complete, and return the Intent to Participate form by Tuesday, May 1st. (If you do not have access to a computer, please request a hard copy of the specific forms you need from Mrs. Drews in the office.)
Students who elect to participate will have their name read on the morning announcements and their name printed and hung on a hallway wall display. Directions on where and when to bring in the projects will be shared in future Lisbon Lines.
We are excited to highlight the commitment shown and the hard work done by the LES students this year. Many thanks for all of your support at home and in the building this year.
* Students in any grade may conduct a Science Investigation to answer a question/problem. Students will use The Scientific Method to learn the systematic approach to solving a problem.
** Students in Kindergarten, First or Second grade may submit a collection. Students will collect and organize something of interest, answering questions related to observations made while exploring their world.
*** Students in any grade may submit an invention. Students will use the engineering design process to create an invention that will solve a problem or answer a question.
